About Genesis

Genesis were an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, in Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's longest-lasting and most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. In the 1970s, during which the band also included singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, Genesis were among the pioneers of progressive rock. Banks and Rutherford have been the only constant members throughout the band's history. The band were formed by Charterhouse pupils Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, guitarist Anthony Phillips and drummer Chris Stewart. Their name was provided by former Charterhouse pupil and pop impresario Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album From Genesis to Revelation in 1969. After splitting from King, the band began touring, signed with Charisma Records and shifted to progressive rock with their succeeding album Trespass (1970). Phillips departed after the album's recording, with Banks, Rutherford and Gabriel recruiting Collins and Hackett before recording Nursery Cryme (1971).

Genesis — Rare Footage & Clips

Genesis, one of the most influential and iconic rock bands in history, has left an indelible mark on the music world. Formed in 1967 by Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, the band's journey spans over five decades, with a remarkable discography that showcases their evolution from a folk-rock group to pioneers of progressive rock.

The band's name was aptly provided by Jonathan King, a former Charterhouse pupil and pop impresario who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album From Genesis to Revelation in 1969. This early work laid the foundation for their future endeavors, as they began to explore new sounds and styles with their succeeding albums Trespass (1970) and Nursery Cryme (1971). The latter marked a significant turning point in their career, with the addition of Phil Collins on drums and vocals, cementing the classic line-up that would define Genesis' sound for years to come.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Genesis is their ability to seamlessly blend different genres, creating a unique sonic landscape that captivated audiences worldwide. Their 1970s output, particularly albums like Foxtrot (1972), Selling England by the Pound (1973), and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974), showcased their innovative approach to songwriting, incorporating complex arrangements, conceptual themes, and atmospheric soundscapes.

The archive's collection of rare footage provides a glimpse into Genesis' creative process and evolution. In "Genesis Then & Now | Tribute to Rock’s Progressive Legends," the band members share stories about their early days, while in "Charlie Kirk Breaks Down Genesis 1," Collins offers insights into the band's biblical influences. The short clip "Biblically Accurate Noah’s Flood 🌊🕊️ (Genesis 6:9-11) #bible #noahsark #shorts" takes a more literal approach, using the band's name as inspiration for a humorous animated interpretation of the biblical story.

The archive also features behind-the-scenes footage from various tours and recording sessions. "GENESIS - Backstage of the 'Turn It On Again' Tour (2007), 576p" offers a glimpse into the band's preparations for their reunion tour, while "Genesis - The Invisible Tour (behind the scenes) 1987" showcases the camaraderie and humor that defined their live performances. In "Genesis: The Last Domino? (Documentary 2021)," the band members reflect on their legacy, discussing the challenges they faced during their final years together.

The significance of Genesis in music history cannot be overstated. As one of the pioneering bands of progressive rock, they helped shape the genre's sound and style. Their influence can be heard in countless other artists who followed in their footsteps, from Rush to Yes, and even beyond into more contemporary genres like prog-metal. The band's ability to push boundaries and experiment with new sounds has left a lasting impact on the music world.

The archive's collection of live performances is equally impressive, with rare footage from various eras of the band's career. "Genesis - Selling England by the pound (Rare video)" features a captivating performance of one of their most beloved songs, while "Shepperton Studios Live 1973 16mm Film - 50th Anniversary Remaster (4K)" offers a stunning visual representation of their live energy during this period.

The band's creative process is also on display in "Genesis - Behind The Track (I Can't Dance)," which provides an intimate look at the songwriting and recording process for one of their most popular songs. This level of transparency into their craft is rare, making this clip a valuable addition to any music enthusiast's collection.

The band's final years together are documented in "Super 8 Footage of Genesis Live at LA Fourm in 1977 with Audio," which captures the energy and excitement of their live performances during this period. The archive also features a rare rehearsal performance from 1986, as seen in "Genesis - Do The Neurotic live [September 1986 Rehearsal] (The Spectrum, Philadelphia)."

One of the most fascinating aspects of Genesis' legacy is the way they have been able to transcend generations and styles. From their early folk-rock sound to their later progressive rock explorations, the band has consistently pushed boundaries and challenged listeners to explore new sonic landscapes.

In conclusion, the archive's collection of rare footage provides a unique glimpse into Genesis' creative process, evolution, and legacy. With over 50 years of music-making under their belt, the band's influence on the music world is undeniable. As one of the most iconic rock bands in history, Genesis continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike, cementing their place as one of the greatest bands of all time.

The band's impact extends beyond the realm of music as well. Their conceptual themes and biblical influences have inspired countless artists, writers, and filmmakers. The way they blended different genres and styles has paved the way for future experimentation in various art forms.

Genesis' legacy is a testament to their innovative spirit, creative vision, and dedication to pushing boundaries. As we continue to explore the vast expanse of music history, Genesis remains an essential chapter in the story of rock 'n' roll, inspiring new generations of musicians and fans alike.
