About Live Footage

Live performance footage captures the energy, spontaneity, and imperfection that studio recordings polish away. The rarest live clips are from small venues, early gigs, one-off collaborations, and performances where something unexpected happened — a song played differently, a moment of improvisation, or a connection between the artist and the audience that was never repeated.

About Genesis

The band's longest-lasting and most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Genesis Live Footage

Capturing the Essence of Genesis: Unveiling the Band's Live Legacy

For over four decades, Genesis has been a stalwart of progressive rock, weaving intricate tapestries of sound that have captivated audiences worldwide. With a career spanning from the late 1960s to the early 1990s, the band has undergone numerous transformations, yet two constants remained: Tony Banks' masterful keyboard work and Mike Rutherford's versatile bass playing. As we delve into the live footage archive, it becomes clear that Genesis was always at its most compelling when performing live.

One of the earliest and rarest clips in our collection is "Genesis Shepperton Studios Live 1973 16mm Film - 50th Anniversary Remaster (4K)". This beautifully restored footage captures a pivotal moment in the band's history, showcasing their fledgling line-up, which included Peter Gabriel on vocals and Steve Hackett on guitar. The energy emanating from this performance is palpable, as if the band is still discovering its own identity. It's fascinating to see how Genesis' early sound, characterized by Gabriel's theatricality and Hackett's virtuosic playing, laid the groundwork for their future innovations.

The mid-to-late 1970s marked a significant period in Genesis' career, with the release of albums such as "Selling England by the Pound" (1973) and "A Trick of the Tail" (1976). During this time, Phil Collins began to assert himself as a vocalist and drummer, gradually supplanting Gabriel. Our collection features an intriguing clip from 1977, captured on Super 8 film at LA Forum: "Super 8 Footage of Genesis Live at LA Fourm in 1977 with Audio". Although the image quality is somewhat compromised due to the format, the audio is remarkably clear, allowing us to appreciate Collins' growing confidence as a frontman. The performance itself is notable for its dynamic range, showcasing the band's ability to seamlessly transition between intricate instrumental passages and soaring vocal sections.

As Genesis continued to evolve throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, their live shows became increasingly sophisticated, incorporating elaborate stage sets and lighting effects. One of the standout clips in our collection is "Genesis - Live 1975-1978 Rare Footage - Part II". This compilation showcases the band's impressive range, with performances from various venues across Europe and North America. We see glimpses of their iconic song "Supper's Ready", as well as other fan favorites like "The Carpet Crawlers" and "Firth of Fifth".

While Genesis' live shows were always a testament to their musicianship, it's the more intimate moments that truly reveal the band's character. Our collection includes a rare rehearsal clip from 1986: "Genesis - Do The Neurotic live [September 1986 Rehearsal] (The Spectrum, Philadelphia)". Filmed at a relatively small venue, this performance captures the band in a state of creative flux, experimenting with new material and arrangements. Collins' vocals are particularly striking, conveying a sense of urgency and experimentation that is both captivating and unsettling.

Through these live footage clips, we gain a deeper understanding of Genesis' artistic trajectory, witnessing their growth from an experimental outfit to one of the most respected and beloved progressive rock bands of all time. Each performance offers a unique perspective on the band's creative process, revealing the tensions between innovation and tradition that defined their legacy. As we continue to explore the depths of Genesis' live archive, it becomes clear that these performances are not merely historical artifacts but living testaments to the enduring power of music to connect us across time and space.
