There’s no doubt, the song “In The Air Tonight” has an eerie quality due to its haunting nature. Collins wrote the song following his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertarelli. "I wrote it after my wife left me," he told Rolling Stone in 2016. Collins recalled how Genesis had been on an extended tour, and his wife warned him they wouldn't remain together if he went on another tour. He chose to fulfill his musical commitments, and upon his return from a tour in Japan, his wife decided to leave and take the children with her. This unsettling separation led Collins to pour his emotions into songwriting. Phil Collins said quote “one day I was working on a piece in D Minor the saddest key of all. I just wrote a sequence and it sounded nice. I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration.”
