"I wrote it after my wife left me," he told Rolling Stone in 2016. Collins recalled how Genesis had been on an extended tour, and his wife warned him they wouldn't remain together if he went on another tour. He chose to fulfill his musical commitments, and upon his return from a tour in Japan, his wife decided to leave and take the children with her.
