About This Footage

The clip "John Lee Hooker - My Own Blues" is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the life of one of America's most iconic blues musicians. Recorded at an unspecified date, but likely sometime in the 1960s or early 1970s, this 2:37 minute snippet showcases John Lee Hooker's unique style and artistry.

What makes this footage notable is its rarity. As a "Rare" clip, it is one of the few surviving recordings of Hooker performing live, outside of his studio albums. This scarcity is all the more significant given Hooker's prolific career, which spanned over seven decades and yielded numerous classics such as "Boogie Chillen," "Crawlin' King Snake," and "Sugar Mama Blues."

The clip itself is a mesmerizing example of Hooker's electric Delta blues style, which he developed in Detroit during the 1940s. His distinctive guitar playing, characterized by its driving rhythms and percussive chord progressions, is on full display here. The song "My Own Blues" is likely an original composition, one that showcases Hooker's ability to craft memorable melodies and lyrics.

Hooker's performance style was always marked by a sense of spontaneity and improvisation. This clip is no exception, with Hooker seemingly lost in the moment as he plays and sings. His voice is gravelly and expressive, conveying the emotional intensity of his music. The guitar work is equally impressive, with Hooker using his instrument to create a dynamic, percussive sound that underscores the song's bluesy themes.

The fact that this clip comes from an album titled "Urban Blues" is also significant. Released in 1961, "Urban Blues" was one of Hooker's earliest albums for Vee-Jay Records and marked a turning point in his career. It was on this record that Hooker began to explore new sounds and styles, incorporating elements of jazz and soul into his music.

Despite its brevity, this clip offers a valuable insight into Hooker's artistry and creative process. For fans of the blues, it is a rare treat, providing a glimpse into the life and work of one of America's most influential musicians. Even for those unfamiliar with Hooker's music, this clip serves as an introduction to his unique style and sound.

The rarity of this footage only adds to its value, making "John Lee Hooker - My Own Blues" a must-see for anyone interested in the blues. As a piece of musical history, it is a precious find, one that offers a glimpse into the life and work of a true American original.
