About This Footage

The clip "Gerry Niewood - Share My Dream (1985)" is a rare and noteworthy piece of footage that showcases the talents of American jazz saxophonist and flutist Gerry Niewood. Recorded in 1985, this acoustic performance stands out as an exceptional example of Niewood's skill and artistry.

Niewood's background in jazz is well-documented, having graduated from the prestigious Eastman School of Music alongside fellow notable musician Chuck Mangione. This shared connection highlights the rich musical heritage that Rochester, New York has contributed to American jazz. The fact that Niewood worked extensively with Mangione further underscores his standing within the jazz community.

The credits for "Share My Dream" reveal a talented ensemble of musicians who bring this piece to life. Jay Leonhart's acoustic bass and Dave Weckl's drums provide a solid foundation, while Joe Beck's guitar adds depth and texture. Michael Camilo's piano and synthesizer work blend seamlessly with Niewood's saxophone and flute playing.

The fact that "Share My Dream" was released on the DMP label in 1985 as part of the CD-450 format is significant. This era marked a pivotal moment in the music industry, as compact discs began to gain popularity and replace vinyl records. The inclusion of this clip in our archive serves as a reminder of the evolution of music formats and the impact they have had on how we consume and experience music.

Furthermore, Niewood's composition "Share My Dream" itself is an intriguing aspect of this footage. As a fusion piece that blends elements of jazz, funk, and rock, it showcases Niewood's versatility as a composer and performer. The song's structure and melody demonstrate a clear understanding of jazz harmony and phrasing, while the incorporation of synthesizers and electronic elements adds a modern twist.

The clip itself is notable for its acoustic performance, which presents a stark contrast to the often-overproduced soundscapes that dominated the music industry during this period. Niewood's decision to strip down his arrangement and focus on the raw, emotive qualities of his playing serves as a testament to his dedication to the art form.

In conclusion, "Gerry Niewood - Share My Dream (1985)" is an exceptional piece of footage that not only highlights Niewood's impressive musicianship but also provides a unique glimpse into the jazz scene of the 1980s.
