The two had been guest musicians at a few gigs for Gregory Porter, who in turn kindly accepted their invitation to perform at Herre’s MTV Unplugged session (produced by Herre alongside Di Gioia and Samon Kawamura as production team KAHEDI). Porter’s approach to the jazz quartet inspired Max to reflect how a rap artist could work in a more freely-flowingmusical environment. Di Gioia’s inspiration was a bit more straightforward: in the 80s, Di Gioia had played with jazz legends like Woody Shaw, Johnny Griffin, and James Moody, but he’d largely left the jazz stages of his early years behind — just one random jam session with Porter’s musicians during soundcheck relit his passion immensely. A short time later, Herre called Di Gioia saying “Let’s get a spiritual jazz session going.” Now, six years later, the album WEB MAX is the amazing result from the spur of that moment. It is a wonderful homage to the cosmic open-mindedness of early 70s jazz, to the transcendent sublimity of spiritual sound. On the album version of “Satori Ways”, New York-based Brandee Younger brings a touch of atmospheric depth with her harp, evoking the spirit of pioneers like Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. Tony Lakatos‘s dark-hued alto flute illuminates the unusual timbres and arrangement of this piece. About R.E.M.

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...

About This Footage

The recent release of "Web Web x Max Herre - Satori Ways (Live @ State Opera Stuttgart)" has sparked interest in the music community, particularly among fans of spiritual jazz and improvisational music. This live performance, recorded at the State Opera Stuttgart in 2021, is a notable addition to the archive of rare artists footage.

The clip features Web Web and Max Herre's collaboration on their song "Satori Ways," taken from their album "WEB MAX." The album itself is a result of a chance encounter between Herre and Italian-German pianist Roberto Di Gioia in 2014, which led to a series of jam sessions inspired by the spiritual jazz of the early 1970s. This project has been met with critical acclaim for its unique blend of rap and free-flowing musical environments.

One aspect that sets this performance apart is the accompaniment by the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, conducted by Magnus Lindgren Music. The combination of Web Web's lyrics and Max Herre's vocals with the orchestral backing creates a rich and atmospheric sound, reminiscent of pioneers like Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane.

Dorothy Ashby, in particular, is an interesting reference point for this performance. As one of the most accomplished modern jazz harpists, Ashby established the harp as an improvising instrument, capable of playing bebop with ease. Her influence can be heard in Brandee Younger's contribution to "Satori Ways," adding a touch of atmospheric depth to the song.

The live performance at State Opera Stuttgart is also notable for its rare glimpse into the soundcheck process. Jam sessions, like this one, are often used by musicians to develop new material and find suitable arrangements. The fact that this particular session has been documented and shared with the public provides a unique insight into the creative process of these artists.

The involvement of NME in promoting this performance is also worth mentioning. As a British music, film, gaming, and culture website, bimonthly magazine, and brand, NME has played a significant role in shaping the music industry over the years. Their support for emerging artists like Web Web and Max Herre highlights their commitment to showcasing innovative and boundary-pushing talent.

In conclusion, this live performance of "Satori Ways" is a testament to the power of improvisational music and collaboration. The combination of spiritual jazz, free-flowing musical environments, and orchestral backing creates a unique sound that pays homage to pioneers like Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. This clip serves as a reminder of the importance of jam sessions in developing new material and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

The fact that this performance has been documented and shared with the public provides a valuable resource for music enthusiasts, historians, and scholars alike. As we continue to explore the rich tapestry of musical heritage, clips like these serve as a reminder of the creative potential that lies at the intersection of different genres and styles.
