25: A History Of Atlantic Records 1948-1973

1940s1948DocumentaryTV AppearanceRare

NOTE: Due to a (correct) ContentID match causing the video to be blocked worldwide, there is a 12 second gap in the audio just before the 22 minute mark. Also, this video is (strangely enough) blocked in New Zealand. This old film, produced at the time (1973), celebrates the first 25 years of Atlantic Records. From it's small beginnings to becoming one of the largest labels for rhythm 'n' blues and jazz labels and then beyond. A great little documentary (well, really, one big commercial) showing the history of one of the great record labels of America. This film has been sitting in the vaults of Australia's ABC Television since 1973 and boy does it show! This was actually broadcast in 2014, about 40 years after it was made! Since it was made, Atlantic Records was purchased by Warner Music (part of Warner Brothers) and was the E in WEA Records around the world outside of America.

About This Footage

This rare documentary, "25: A History Of Atlantic Records 1948-1973," is a fascinating time capsule that offers an intimate glimpse into the formative years of one of America's most iconic record labels. Produced in 1973 to commemorate Atlantic Records' 25th anniversary, this 30-minute film is a testament to the label's remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming a household name.

The footage itself is remarkable for its age and rarity. Having been stored in the vaults of Australia's ABC Television since its production, it was only recently unearthed and broadcast in 2014 – a staggering 40 years after its initial release. This delayed premiere speaks volumes about the enduring legacy of Atlantic Records, which has continued to thrive even as the music industry itself has undergone seismic shifts.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this documentary is its candid portrayal of the label's early days. At the time of filming, Atlantic Records was already an established force in the music world, having signed some of the biggest names in rhythm 'n' blues and jazz. The film features a range of archival footage, including interviews with key figures from the label's past, which offer valuable insights into its development.

The documentary's tone is decidedly promotional, as one would expect from a commercial produced to celebrate a major milestone. However, this does not detract from its historical significance or entertainment value. On the contrary, it provides a unique window into the label's marketing strategies and artistic vision during this pivotal period in music history.

It's also worth noting that this footage has been subject to some unusual restrictions. Due to a ContentID match, there is a 12-second audio gap just before the 22-minute mark, which somewhat disrupts the viewing experience. Additionally, the video is inexplicably blocked in New Zealand – a curious anomaly that only adds to the enigma surrounding this rare and fascinating footage.

The fact that Atlantic Records has undergone significant changes since its production, including being purchased by Warner Music and becoming part of WEA Records worldwide outside of America, serves as a reminder of the ever-shifting landscape of the music industry. Despite these transformations, however, the label's legacy remains strong, and this documentary is a testament to its enduring impact on popular culture.

In many ways, "25: A History Of Atlantic Records 1948-1973" is more than just a nostalgic look back at the label's past – it's a time capsule that captures the spirit of an era. As such, it offers a compelling case study for music historians and enthusiasts alike, providing valuable insights into the evolution of one of America's most beloved record labels.
