The audio portion of this video was recorded at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall on September 25, 1982 during a Bismillah Khan concert produced by the Ameer Khusro Society of America. Alice Coltrane (August 27, 1937 - January 12, 2007), the wife of John Coltrane, was deep into Indian classical music and had performed at a Chicago concert produced by the Ameer Khusro Society in 1981. An aficionado of Bismillah Khan, she offered to contribute the introductory remarks for the double-album that resulted from the recording of the September 25, 1982 concert. Bismillah Khan (March 21, 1916 - August 21, 2006), often referred to by the honorific title Ustad, was an Indian musician credited with popularizing the shehnai, a subcontinental wind instrument of the oboe class. While the shehnai had long held importance as a folk instrument played primarily during traditional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its status and bringing it to the concert stage. In 2001 he was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, becoming the third classical musician after M. S. Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar to be accorded this distinction. http://www.aksa.us https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismillah_Khan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Coltrane https://www.allaboutjazz.com/the-shenais-humble-master-bismillah-khan-saregama-india-review-by-chris-may.php ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All of the MUSIC clips on this channel can be easily accessed via the listing that you will find HERE: http://www.TheMotionDevotion.com/docs/ytmusic.htm ¸.•*´¯`*•.¸.¸.•*´¯`*•.¸•*´¯`*•.¸ ¸.•*´¯`*•.¸¸.•*´¯`*•.¸.¸.•*´¯`*•.
