The Nick Riley Band is a fast emerging U.S rock band from Minneapolis, MN. Founding members Nick Riley (singer-songwriter, guitar), Matt Call (bass), and Blayr Alexander (drums) bring an eclectic array of influence that encompasses blues, rock, funk, jam band, and gospel. This unique blend results in a distinctive and dynamic sound that is swiftly earning fans from a variety of quarters. Riley and Alexander have a history that began at church where they grew up playing together. When Riley decided it was time to branch out and record his original material, there was no doubt as to whom he would choose as his percussion cornerstone. He recounts how his vision has played out. "For years I remember sitting in my bedroom writing songs hoping that no one else would snatch him up before I was ready." It was through what he calls 'an inner prompting' and tremendous encouragement from his wife that he worked up the courage to play his original material live for the first time, including taking the lead with vocals. Just days before his first gig and in desperate need of a remarkable bass player, Riley stumbled upon bassist Matt Call through a mutual acquaintance. He recalls, "It was very evident that the 3 of us possessed an uncommon chemistry right from the start." When asked to describe the music they play, his response is one of sincerity and authenticity. "We play what's from the heart, because that's really the only thing that will reach the heart. I remind myself of this every time I write a new song. Otherwise I find myself trying to write through a bunch of filters that aren't really me." During the first few rehearsals when Riley would introduce a song, the band would look to him as a guide in regards to the feel and direction that he was looking for. They have now established a formula for success that honors their individual strengths and harmonizes to produce music that has a life and spirit all it's own. Rather than focusing on a specific musical genre or style, the Nick Riley band performs with a creative spontaneity that's refreshing, creative, and soul stirring. When you hear them live you'll experience a sound that's being birthed right out of that moment that's sure to bring you back for more.
R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...

This 0:31 clip of "Nick Riley Band Concert Promo Video" is a rare gem, offering a glimpse into the early days of a band that was still finding its footing in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The video itself is a home recording, likely made during a rehearsal session, and features the Nick Riley Band performing an original song with a distinctive blend of rock, blues, funk, jam band, and gospel influences.
At this time, R.E.M., one of the most influential bands of the 1980s, was still in its formative years. The Athens, Georgia-based quartet had just released their debut single "Radio Free Europe" in 1981 and were beginning to gain traction with their unique sound, which would go on to influence a generation of alternative rock bands.
No Doubt, another iconic band from the same era, was also emerging onto the scene. Formed in Anaheim, California in 1986, the band's early years saw them develop a distinctive ska-punk sound that would eventually give way to a more pop-infused style. Gwen Stefani's powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence were already beginning to make waves.
The Nick Riley Band, on the other hand, was still an emerging force in the Minneapolis music scene. With their eclectic blend of influences and energetic live performances, they were quickly gaining a following among fans of rock, blues, and funk music. This promo video offers a unique glimpse into the band's early days, showcasing their raw energy and musical chemistry.
One of the most striking aspects of this clip is its intimate, home-recorded feel. The camera captures the band performing in a cramped rehearsal space, with Nick Riley's guitar amp and drum kit taking center stage. The sound quality is rough around the edges, but it only adds to the sense of raw energy and spontaneity that permeates the performance.
As we watch this clip, we're reminded that even the most iconic bands began somewhere – in a cramped rehearsal space, with no audience but themselves. This promo video offers a rare glimpse into the early days of a band still finding its voice, and it's a testament to the power of music to bring people together and transcend genres.
The Nick Riley Band's unique blend of influences is on full display here, as they launch into an original song with a driving beat and infectious guitar riffs. The chemistry between the three band members – Nick Riley, Matt Call, and Blayr Alexander – is palpable, and it's clear that they're still figuring out their sound but are undeniably passionate about what they do.

Nick Riley's words ring true: "We play what's from the heart, because that's really the only thing that will reach the heart." This promo video is a testament to the power of genuine emotion and musical chemistry to create something truly special – even if it's just a rough-around-the-edges home recording.
The final shot of this clip lingers on Nick Riley's face as he launches into the song, his eyes closed in concentration. It's a moment that speaks volumes about the artist's passion and dedication to his craft. As we watch this clip, we're reminded that music is often at its most raw and powerful when it's coming from the heart – and that even the most iconic bands began somewhere, with nothing but their own music and a willingness to take risks.
