THE BLUES SOUL OF LONNIE SHIELDS LIVE AT THE 100 CLUB, LONDON 1998 A blues music documentary featuring a performance from charismatic bluesman Lonnie Shields recorded on 7th April 1998 at The 100 Club, London, England. The fifth in a series of contemporary blues video recordings from the 1990’s. Lonnie Shields from West Helena, Arkansas represents the ‘next generation’ of bluesmen. His exposure to the blues came through working with legendary drummer, Sam Carr, who was part of The Jelly Roll Kings alongside Frank Frost and Big Jack Johnson. When this was filmed in 1998, this was Lonnie’s only ever English gig at the time and what better place for it to be than at The 100 Club in London, a club that’s been the home of this music since these great Americans started arriving in this country. The show finds Lonnie playing his then new songs from his two JSP albums both of which were produced by Soul-Blues legend Johnny Rawls. Lonnie is a serious artist with some serious music but is also a consummate showman born from the tough circuit of clubs where he comes from. A natural front man with a tight, professional band put together by Otis Grand for the occasion, this was a terrific show and could have been just one of those nights that is now a blur in the memory…but Blues Archive were there and captured another terrific moment in time… Lonnie’s out of that Deep South Blues tradition but he is not one of the ‘rough and ready’ musicians who seem to have been taken up by some of the rock-blues crowd. He is a far more interesting artist than that - he melds the hard blues with a soul sensitivity and a sure touch as a songwriter. JOHN STEDMAN – JSP RECORDS DIRECTED AND PRODUCED BY PAUL REED – BLUES ARCHIVE Available from Amazon Prime Video.
