BLUES LIVE & ALIVE – THE BLUES CONCERTS – A SELECTION A collection of blues performances shot in the 1990’s taken from the series of blues music documentaries produced by JSP Records with Blues Archive. Rarely have professional film makers set out to film live and in-their-prime blues artists and show it as it was. What we have here is one performance from each of the productions filmed by Blues Archive in the 1990s. It was still a rich period with some genuine living legends still touring and strongly performing. Texas is well represented: Sherman Robertson then on the edge of a big break through showing why he was attracting a mainstream audience. U.P. Wilson was the man with the ultimate live blues show, a phenomenal showman but also a deep, deep blues artist. Andrew ‘Jr Boy’ Jones is still active on the Dallas scene. He has wide skills as a songwriter as well as being a strong performer. Phil Guy was known as a Chicago bluesman but his roots, echoing the deep stylings and the wild sound of Guitar Slim, were in Louisiana. Compare him to Larry Garner who brought the Louisiana sound up-to-date with the best songs and lyrics of the era and unique live shows. Lonnie Shields was a young man when his set at The 100 Club was filmed. Now a veteran, his high energy show is undiminished. Jimmy Dawkins was simply a stone Chicago Blues guitar legend. Not flamboyant on stage, his ‘presence’ is superbly caught by the Blues Archive cameras. This program is completed by two US artists who made their home in Europe. Otis Grand is simply England’s favorite blues artist with a huge and loyal following. Angela Brown made her home in Germany and is another artist with a live act which it is worth making a long journey to witness. Here, the blues is presented at its musical best by Blues Archive.
