The 5th Cup - A Spirit Explosion - Gershon Kingsley & Norman Simon With Theodore Bikel
I apologize for any skips, there are some scratches on the outside of the record but luckily there aren't too many farther in. This is a very interesting fusion of genres including gospel, psychedelic, jazz and electronic music. I would argue this is by far one of the most interesting records I have found to date. I do not own this music and I am uploading for entertainment purposes only. " THE FIFTH CUP is an exciting and exhilarating creation of lyricist Norman Simon and composer Gershon Kingsley. The work is based on a religious theme. It is not, however, a religious service. A contemporary version of the Passover Seder, this musical dramatization extends the ageless theme of slavery and brings it to the threshold of a computerized era. We are held in bondage not only to the forces of evil from without political economic, but also enslavements. Abraham Joshua Heschel referred to the latter as am expression of "the insecurity of freedom." "What would you give for security?" we are asked in the FITH CUP: "Would you give up your right today, Give up the right to say what you think, To put it all down with pen and ink. What would you give for security?" The marvelous pedagogical device of the simple chanting of the traditional Four Questions is the spring from which gushes forth a meledy of responses. "Why on this night do we eat unleavened bread?" "Unleavened bread is a poor man's bread, and poverty is a form of slavery."
