"All You Need is Love - Swing!" documentary c1980
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BEATLES. From my collection of off-the-air recordings on VHS cassettes, this is a British documentary about swing music. I recorded this program from WNET, Channel 13, Newark. The first 11:20 of WNET's transmission was not in color, probably because of trouble with the videotape recording of the film that the station was using. After some tape glitches, the rest of their transmission was in color (although, there were more black and white images in the film). Most of the performers and commentators are not identified. I added captions to identify all those that I recognized. One notable exception is the trumpet player who appears beginning at 11:39. (Help please!) Those I could identify (sometimes with help from Wikipedia) include: Cab Calloway, actor Ken Murray, Original Dixieland Jass Band members J. Russel Robinson, Eddie Edwards, Tony Spargo, Larry Shields and Nick LaRocca, Hugues Panassie, Benny Goodman, disc jockey Martin Block, Guy Lombardo, Lawrence Welk, Artie Shaw, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Bud Freeman, Art Tatum, Fletcher Henderson, Harry Goodman, Harry James, Ziggy Elman, Chris Griffin, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, The Benny Goodman Quartet, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Babe Russin, The Rhythm Boys (Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, and Harry Barris), Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers, head of the musicians' union-James C. Petrillo, Fran Warren, Perry Como and Ella Fitzgerald.
