Ray Noble and His Orchestra - Tiger Rag (1933)
Tiger Rag Music composed by Nick LaRocca Ray Noble and His Orchestra Recorded on October 4, 1933 Victor 24577 Although the Original Dixieland Jazz Band is credited with the first recording of "Tiger Rag", its actual origins began some time earlier in New Orleans. Jelly Roll Morton states that "Tiger Rag" was adapted from a French quadrille tune. Variations of "Tiger Rag" have been recorded by many bands of the 1920s and 1930s as an up-tempo showpiece for soloists. The tune has been described as the second most recorded jazz tune between 1900 and 1942. Ray Noble, while generally associated with sweet dance arrangements, produced this energetic recording featuring hot jazz choruses for alto sax, trumpet, piano, trombone and clarinet. In this related video clip, pianist Frank French demonstrates how the original quadrille tune evolves into the familiar "Tiger Rag". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFrHVmCHw64
