About This Footage

The grainy, low-fi footage of Melvins performing "Make Those Fries With Extra Grease" by The Pop O Pies is a time capsule from the early days of grunge. Filmed in 1993, during their 30th Anniversary tour, this clip is a rare glimpse into the band's live performances at the height of their influence. At the time, Melvins were already a staple of the underground music scene, but they were still years away from achieving mainstream recognition.

The fact that this footage exists at all is a testament to the band's DIY ethos and commitment to their art. Formed in 1983, Melvins were one of the first bands to blend elements of punk, metal, and psychedelia, creating a sound that would later become synonymous with grunge. With their debut album "Gluey Porch Tricks" released in 1987, they began to attract attention from fans and fellow musicians alike.

The Pop O Pies' "Make Those Fries With Extra Grease" is an anthem of sorts, its catchy hooks and driving rhythms making it a fan favorite among the Melvins' devoted following. The band's ability to reimagine and reinterpret other artists' work was a key aspect of their appeal, demonstrating their versatility and creativity as musicians.

The 1993 tour marked a significant milestone for Melvins, with the band celebrating three decades of existence amidst a thriving underground music scene. This footage captures the energy and intensity of their live performances during this period, showcasing Buzz Osborne's distinctive vocals and guitar work, Dale Crover's pounding drums, and the band's signature blend of chaos and precision.

The fact that this clip is labeled as "rare" by YouTube suggests that it has been largely overlooked or underappreciated until now. This is a shame, given the historical significance of Melvins' contributions to the development of grunge and sludge metal. By watching this footage, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of the band's live performances during their formative years and appreciate the raw energy that defined their music.

The clip itself is a fascinating document of a bygone era, with its rough, analog production values and cramped, dimly lit setting. The audience at Slims in San Francisco appears to be a mix of familiar faces from the local music scene and enthusiastic newcomers, all united in their appreciation for Melvins' unique sound.

As the band launches into "Make Those Fries With Extra Grease," the energy in the room becomes palpable. Osborne's vocals soar above the din of Crover's drums and the thudding bass lines, while the guitar work provides a propulsive undercurrent that drives the song forward. It's a testament to Melvins' enduring influence that even three decades later, their music remains as vital and compelling as ever.

The final shot of the clip shows the band members exchanging grins and high-fives with each other, basking in the adoration of their audience. This fleeting moment captures the camaraderie and shared passion that defined Melvins' live performances during this period, and serves as a reminder of the special bond between artist and fan that is at the heart of any great musical experience.
