About This Footage

This footage, "SHIHAD-SET_1-PART_2-1989", is a rare gem that offers a glimpse into the early days of New Zealand's most iconic rock band, Shihad. Filmed in 1989 at the Grunt Records and Video Specialists Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Awards, this live performance showcases the band's raw energy and potential, just as they were starting to make waves in the local music scene.

At the time of filming, Shihad was a fledgling band consisting of Tom Larkin, Phil Knight, Jon Toogood, and Karl Kippenberger. Formed in 1988, they were still in their teenage years, with most members being around 16 at the time. Yet, despite their youth, they had already begun to make a name for themselves in New Zealand's heavy metal scene, earning recognition as one of the country's best young bands.

This performance is significant not only because it captures Shihad's early sound but also because it highlights their achievement in winning the 1989 award for Best New Zealand Heavy Metal band. This accolade was a testament to their dedication and talent, even at such a young age. It's a moment that would have been pivotal in shaping their career trajectory, giving them a platform to showcase their music to a wider audience.

The footage itself is remarkable, with crisp sound quality courtesy of George from Soundman (now Soundpeople) and senior cameraman Mike Symes capturing the band's performance with precision. Directed and produced by Paul Sparkes for Video Specialists, this live recording offers an intimate look at Shihad's early days, with a raw energy that's infectious.

One of the most striking aspects of this footage is the band's stage presence. Even at such a young age, they exude confidence and charisma, showcasing their chemistry as musicians. Jon Toogood's vocals are particularly noteworthy, conveying a sense of urgency and passion that would become a hallmark of Shihad's sound in years to come.

This clip is also notable for its historical context. 1989 was an exciting time for New Zealand music, with the country's scene beginning to gain international recognition. Bands like Shihad were at the forefront of this movement, pushing the boundaries of heavy metal and rock music. This performance serves as a snapshot of that era, capturing the energy and creativity that defined it.

As viewers watch this footage, they'll be struck by the band's potential and promise. Even in their early days, Shihad was something special – a group of talented young musicians who were destined for greatness. This clip offers a unique glimpse into their formative years, showcasing the raw talent and energy that would eventually propel them to international success.

The significance of this footage extends beyond its historical value, too. It's a reminder that even the most successful artists begin somewhere – often in small clubs or local venues like the Blenheim Road Motor Inn where Shihad performed for this awards ceremony. This performance is a testament to the power of live music, capturing the raw emotion and energy of a band at the height of their potential.

As the clip comes to an end, viewers are left with a lasting impression – one that's both nostalgic and forward-thinking. They're reminded of the early days of Shihad, but also of the enduring legacy they've built over the years. This footage is more than just a rare gem; it's a time capsule that captures the essence of New Zealand's music scene in the late 1980s – a moment that would shape the course of rock history.
