Monthly we film 3 to 4 sessions with promising and breakthrough acts from all over the world. Many well-known acts have visited the show; from James Taylor, Elliott Smith and David Crosby to Damien Jurado, Ben Howard and Josh Ritter, via Radiohead, Nirvana, Coldplay and Foo Fighters. Archive footage can regularly be seen in (theatrical) documentary movies, like “Mystify: Michael Hutchence” (with footage of our session with INXS, filmed in 1997), “Heaven Adores You” (with footage of our session with Elliott Smith, filmed in 1998) and “All I Can Say” (with footage of our session with Blind Melon, filmed in 1993). The show started back in 1987 by radio presenter Jan Douwe Kroeske. On his popular national radio show he persuaded New-Zeeland band Crowded House to play a couple of songs. The response of the public was so great, that 2 Meter Sessions quickly became a household name. In 1993, the show made a successful transition to national television. From there the show became a national phenomenon, for over 10 years, with filmed sessions of new talent, breakthrough acts and arrived career artists. Almost a million of 2 Meter Sessions cd’s were sold in the Netherlands. About This Footage

The haziness of Mazzy Star's soundscapes is perfectly captured in this 1996 live performance of "Flowers in December" on the Dutch music show "2 Meter Sessions". The clip, a rare gem from their 1996 album "Among My Swan", offers a glimpse into the band's ethereal and introspective world. Mazzy Star, formed in 1988 by David Roback and Hope Sandoval, was already gaining momentum by this point, having released two critically acclaimed albums prior to "Among My Swan".

The significance of this clip lies not only in its rarity but also in the context of Mazzy Star's career at the time. In 1996, alternative rock was exploding onto the scene, with bands like Radiohead and Nirvana dominating the airwaves. Mazzy Star, however, remained a cult favorite, their dreamy soundscapes and Sandoval's haunting vocals setting them apart from the grunge movement. This performance on "2 Meter Sessions" showcases the band's ability to craft hypnotic, atmospheric music that transcended genres.

The 2 Meter Sessions platform itself is noteworthy, having been a staple of Dutch music television since its inception in 1987. Founded by radio presenter Jan Douwe Kroeske, the show has featured an impressive array of artists over the years, from James Taylor and Elliott Smith to Radiohead and Coldplay. The show's legacy extends beyond its own broadcasts, with archive footage regularly appearing in documentary films such as "Mystify: Michael Hutchence" and "Heaven Adores You". This 1996 performance of Mazzy Star is a testament to the platform's commitment to showcasing new talent and providing a unique space for artists to express themselves.

The clip itself is a masterclass in atmospheric live performance. Sandoval's vocals soar above the instrumentation, her voice weaving in and out of the music like a whispered secret. Roback's guitar work is equally impressive, his effects-heavy playing creating a swirling vortex of sound that draws the listener in. The band's chemistry is palpable, their performances honed to perfection over years of touring and recording.

One of the most striking aspects of this performance is its intimacy. Filmed on November 6, 1996, at the "2 Meter Sessions" studio, the clip captures Mazzy Star in a rare moment of vulnerability. The band's soundscapes are often described as dreamy and ethereal, but here they're stripped bare, revealing the emotional depth beneath their music. Sandoval's vocals crack with emotion as she sings about love and loss, her voice trembling like a leaf in the wind.

Watching this clip, one can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. The 1990s were a time of great musical experimentation, with artists pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds. Mazzy Star's music was always a bit ahead of its time, but here, on "2 Meter Sessions", they're perfectly in sync with the mood of the moment.

The legacy of this performance can be seen in the many artists who have followed in Mazzy Star's footsteps. Bands like Cocteau Twins and Slowdive have cited Sandoval as an influence, while their own music has been praised for its dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes. This 1996 performance is a reminder that even the most obscure and underground music can leave a lasting impact on the world of alternative rock.

As the clip fades to black, one is left with the haunting image of Sandoval's vocals lingering in the air, like a ghostly presence. It's a poignant reminder of the power of music to evoke emotions and transport us to another time and place.

Curated from public records and music databases.
