This recording's from Copenhagen, June, 4, 2000. Mazzy Star did a European tour that year & performed a number of new or unreleased songs. Confirmation that "When You Were Young" is this song's correct title came belatedly Dec. , 2016 when Roman Tatus posted to a FB fan group a photo of a set list used onstage at Mazzy Star's 1990-08-18 Chicago gig at The Cabaret Metro he attended. It included a song entitled "When You Were Young," In 2011 with a comeback single, Mazzy Star began releasing studio versions of a number of previously unreleased songs known from live versions the band played in the 1990 to 2000 touring era. Between 2011 and 2018, Mazzy Star released six such older, unreleased songs on albums, e.p.s, and singles. This song, "When You Were Young" is not one of those, and remains unreleased to this day. "When You Were Young" (sometimes mis-titled . "Now That You're Gone") is an unreleased oldie, an early Mazzy song the band played live in 1990 & revived for this 2000 tour . "When You Were Young" isn't as "rare" a song any more, at least not at You Tube, as there are now 3 different live versions to choose from at YT. The first one I uploaded a while back is a muddy sounding recording from a '90 Toronto show. Fortunately, the other two (this one, plus Live at Woody's '90, NYC) are better quality recordings with the vocals/lyrics much clearer, although Hope's voice is in best form on this 2000 one. All 14 songs from Copenhagen 2000, both unreleased & released ones, have been uploaded to YT. WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG (lyrics transcription) When you were young I was around But don't you call Out my name Because you know it - It ain't the same Anymore When you were down I was around But don't you call out my name Because you know it - It ain't the same Anymore 'Cause when you're young And so all alone It's so easy to lose sight But even though I tell you this now I really, really don't care No I don't care No I don't care Because you know it - It ain't the same Anymore

The Mazzy Star archives have yielded another treasure with the release of this rare 2000 live performance of "When You Were Young". This clip, recorded in Copenhagen on June 4th of that year, offers a glimpse into the band's European tour during which they performed a number of new and unreleased songs. The fact that this particular song remains unreleased to this day only adds to its allure.
Mazzy Star's live performances have always been highly regarded for their dreamy, ethereal quality, and "When You Were Young" is no exception. The band's ability to craft hypnotic melodies and atmospheric soundscapes has long been a hallmark of their unique sound. This clip provides a valuable insight into the band's live dynamic, showcasing Hope Sandoval's enchanting vocals and David Roback's masterful guitar work.
The fact that this song was revived for the 2000 tour is particularly interesting, given its origins as an early Mazzy Star track from the 1990 touring era. It's clear that the band continued to refine their sound over the years, incorporating new ideas and arrangements into their live performances. The inclusion of "When You Were Young" in this setlist suggests a deliberate attempt to revisit and reinterpret earlier material, rather than simply relying on established fan favorites.
The clip itself is a masterclass in atmosphere and texture, with Sandoval's vocals floating above the instrumentation like a ghostly presence. Roback's guitar work is as understated yet effective as ever, providing a subtle foundation for the song's dreamy melody. The overall effect is one of hazy nostalgia, transporting listeners to a bygone era of alternative rock.
It's worth noting that this clip has been somewhat overshadowed by subsequent live versions of "When You Were Young", which have surfaced on YouTube in recent years. However, this 2000 performance remains a unique and compelling listen, offering a glimpse into the band's creative process during a pivotal moment in their career. The fact that it remains unreleased to this day only adds to its value as a historical artifact.
In many ways, Mazzy Star's music has always been about capturing the ephemeral and the intangible. This clip is no exception, with "When You Were Young" existing as a fleeting moment of beauty in the band's extensive live catalog. As such, it serves as a poignant reminder of the transience of live performance, and the importance of preserving these moments for future generations to cherish.
