About This Footage

Cherie Currie's Golden Apple performance is a rare gem from 1998, offering a glimpse into the solo career of the iconic Runaways frontwoman. At the time of this footage, Currie had already established herself as a pioneering figure in the punk and rock scenes of the late 1970s. As the lead vocalist of the Runaways, she was known for her raw energy, distinctive vocals, and unapologetic style.

This live performance, recorded on May 29, 1998, is significant not only because it showcases Currie's continued talent as a performer but also highlights the camaraderie between her and fellow musicians. The lineup includes Marie Currie, Cherie's identical twin sister, who shared vocals with her in their 1980 album Messin' With The Boys. The presence of Katt Lowe and Sandy West, another Runaways alumna, underscores the enduring bond between these women.

The Golden Apple performance is particularly noteworthy because it captures a moment when Currie was transitioning from her work with the Runaways to her solo career. Her music had already gained traction in the 1980s, with hits like "Since You Been Gone" reaching the US charts. This live show demonstrates her ability to connect with audiences and deliver memorable performances.

One of the most striking aspects of this footage is the chemistry between Currie and her bandmates. The camaraderie and banter between them are palpable, creating a sense of intimacy that draws the viewer in. Sandy West's presence, in particular, adds depth to the performance, as she brings her own unique energy to the stage.

The Golden Apple show also highlights the importance of women in rock music during the 1990s. As Currie and her bandmates take the stage, they embody a spirit of independence and creative expression that was still relatively rare for women in the male-dominated music industry at the time.

Watching this footage, viewers will gain insight into Cherie Currie's enduring talent as a performer and songwriter. They will also witness the strong bonds between these women, who were trailblazers in their own right. The Golden Apple performance serves as a testament to the power of female collaboration and creativity in shaping the music landscape of the late 20th century.

The legacy of the Runaways and their impact on punk and rock music cannot be overstated. Cherie Currie's solo career, while often overshadowed by her work with the band, is a testament to her enduring talent and dedication to her craft. This live performance at the Golden Apple offers a unique glimpse into that era, one that will resonate with fans of 1970s and 1980s rock music.

The image that lingers long after watching this footage is Cherie Currie's unwavering stage presence, a testament to her status as a true original in the world of rock music.
