Members of Relient K talk with Kristi of WJTL - a Christian Radio Station in Lancaster, PA. This interview was recorded March 8, 2007 just before their surprise show at the Chameleon in support of their new cd - 5 score.

About Relient K

Relient K is an American rock band formed in 1998 in Canton, Ohio by Matt Thiessen, Matt Hoopes, and Brian Pittman during their third year in high school and time at Malone University in Canton. The band is named after guitarist Hoopes' automobile, a Plymouth Reliant K car, with the spelling intentionally altered to avoid trademark infringement over the Reliant name.

About This Footage

In the spring of 2007, Relient K was on the cusp of something big. Their fifth studio album, "Five Score and Seven Years Ago", had just dropped, and the band's energetic live performances were starting to gain traction among fans. But what's striking about this footage is not just the band's music or their charismatic stage presence – it's the candid conversation they share with Kristi of WJTL, a Christian radio station in Lancaster, PA.

Recorded on March 8th, 2007, this interview offers a rare glimpse into Relient K's psyche at a pivotal moment in their career. The band members are relaxed and open, discussing everything from their songwriting process to their personal struggles with faith. What's particularly noteworthy is the way they effortlessly navigate the complexities of their Christian identity, never shying away from the tough questions or doubts that inevitably arise.

At this point in time, Relient K was still a relatively underground act, but one that was rapidly gaining momentum. Their music had always been infused with a strong sense of spirituality and social commentary, which resonated deeply with fans who were hungry for something more authentic than the glossy, commercialized sound of mainstream Christian rock. This interview captures the band's raw energy and vulnerability, as they share their hopes and fears about their place in the world.

One of the most striking aspects of this footage is the way Relient K's members interact with each other. Matt Thiessen's quick wit and humor are on full display as he banter's with Kristi, while Matt Hoopes' introspective nature shines through in his thoughtful responses to her questions. Brian Pittman, meanwhile, brings a quiet intensity to the conversation, offering poignant insights into the band's creative process.

What makes this clip so significant is that it offers a window into Relient K's pre-fame era, when they were still navigating the ups and downs of small-time touring and album releases. It's a reminder that even the most successful artists have humble beginnings, and that their music is often rooted in a deep sense of vulnerability and authenticity.

Watching this interview, viewers will get a sense of Relient K's unique chemistry and camaraderie as a band. They'll also gain a deeper understanding of the artistic and spiritual forces that drove them to create music that was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. And they may even catch a glimpse of the band's signature blend of humor and heart, which has endeared them to fans for over two decades.

In short, this interview is a must-watch for anyone interested in Relient K or Christian rock more broadly. It offers a rare and intimate look at a pivotal moment in the band's career, one that showcases their talent, creativity, and vulnerability in equal measure. Even years later, it remains an essential part of any fan's collection – a testament to the enduring power of music to connect us with others, and with ourselves.
