1st RECORDING OF: Sweet Dreams - Don Gibson (1955 version)

Don Gibson
1950s1955youtube

Far removed from the slick Chet Atkins-produced recordings that would make Don a leading country-pop crossover performer later in the decade, this more ‘traditional-country’ first version of his famous tune received a bit of airplay in 1956 but was mostly buried that year by the top-selling Faron Young release (listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a5Vp8UHV6M ). An updated Gibson treatment for RCA Victor in late 1960 made top-10 on Billboard’s C&W charts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ehm9hCbpQWM , and later in the decade both Patsy Cline and Tommy McClain would successfully record their own unique arrangements. The original 45rpm single was issued on MGM - Sweet Dreams (Gibson) by Don Gibson, recorded September 12, 1955 For hundreds of other ‘originals,’ please visit the fascinating playlist “FIRST RECORDING OF THE SONG…” (click here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLx8kU_D2e4voMCx9SQkXFeSH7CnRO9j7x )

Donald Eugene Gibson was an American country singer and songwriter. Gibson wrote such country standards as the ballad "Sweet Dreams" and "I Can't Stop Loving You", and enjoyed a string of country hits from 1956 until the late '70s, including number ones on the US Country Chart with Oh Lonesome Me and Blue Blue Day, both tracks he also wrote.
