About This Footage

This footage is a rare glimpse into the early days of Queenadreena's Ladybird, a song that would have been released in 2000, during the height of the British alternative rock scene. At this time, KatieJane Garside and Crispin Gray were riding high on their reputation as abrasive songwriters, forged in the fires of Daisy Chainsaw.

Queenadreena's sound was a fusion of blues rock, noise rock, and other genres, with Garside's distinctive vocals taking center stage. This clip is notable not only for its raw energy but also for its historical significance – it offers a window into the band's creative process during this pivotal period in their career.

The YouTube description reveals that these rough demos were written and recorded by Garside and Gray, with most of them never making it onto an official Queenadreena release. The fact that they have been remixed and remastered in 2026 suggests a desire to revisit and reinterpret the band's early work, perhaps as part of a larger effort to reevaluate their legacy.

The credits list Garside and Gray as the primary creative forces behind these recordings, with Crispin Gray handling guitar, bass, drums, and backing vocals. The original recordings were copyrighted in 2008, while the remix and remaster are credited to Gray for 2026. This raises questions about the band's dynamics during this period – was there a deliberate effort to keep certain songs off official releases, or did they simply fall by the wayside?

One of the most striking aspects of this footage is its raw, unpolished quality. The sound is rough around the edges, with Garside's vocals often overpowering the instrumentation. This is not surprising, given that these were early demos, but it does suggest a certain level of experimentation and risk-taking on the part of the band.

The song itself, Ladybird, is a frenetic, high-energy track with a driving rhythm and distorted guitars. Garside's vocals are often at odds with the music, creating a sense of tension that propels the song forward. This is quintessential Queenadreena – abrasive, noisy, and unapologetic.

Watching this footage, one gets a sense of the band's energy and intensity during this period. They were a product of the late 1990s/early 2000s British alternative rock scene, which was characterized by its DIY ethos and anti-establishment stance. Queenadreena was part of this movement, along with other bands like Supergrass and Muse.

The fact that these demos have been remixed and remastered suggests a desire to revive interest in the band's early work. This could be seen as an effort to rebrand or reposition Queenadreena within the music industry, perhaps as part of a larger nostalgia-driven trend. Alternatively, it may simply be a labor of love on the part of Garside and Gray, who are seeking to preserve their legacy and share their early work with a new generation of fans.

In any case, this footage is a rare treat for fans of Queenadreena and the British alternative rock scene in general. It offers a glimpse into the band's creative process during a pivotal period in their career, and provides a unique insight into their sound and style at the time.
