About This Footage

The clip "Lazy Lester - St Louis Blues(take 1)" is a rare gem that offers a glimpse into the early days of swamp blues. Recorded in an unknown location, this take of "St Louis Blues" showcases Lazy Lester's mastery of the electric harmonica, a unique sound that would come to define his style.

At just under four minutes long, this clip is a concise yet impactful representation of Lester's artistry. The fact that it's labeled as "take 1" suggests that it was likely recorded during a session for one of his albums, possibly the expanded edition of "Rides Again". This context implies that we're witnessing an intimate moment in the recording process, where Lester is laying down the foundation for what would become a memorable track.

Lazy Lester's music career spanned over six decades, from 1933 to 2018. During this time, he explored various genres, including swamp blues, harmonica blues, rhythm and blues, and Louisiana blues. This eclectic approach not only helped shape his distinctive sound but also contributed to the evolution of American roots music.

The electric harmonica is a key component of Lester's style, and in this clip, it takes center stage. His playing is characterized by a smooth, expressive tone that weaves together melodic lines with percussive flair. The way he manipulates the instrument's attack and dynamics creates a sense of tension and release, drawing the listener into the performance.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this footage is its rarity. As indicated by the "Rare" tag, it's likely that only a handful of people have seen this specific take of "St Louis Blues". This scarcity makes the clip all the more precious, as it provides a unique window into Lester's creative process and artistic vision.

The context provided by the YouTube description - "Electric Harmonica Blues (From album Rides Again- Expanded Edition)" - suggests that this clip is part of a larger collection of recordings. The expanded edition of "Rides Again" may have been released posthumously, but it's clear that Lester was still actively recording music in his later years.

Lazy Lester's influence on the blues genre cannot be overstated. As one of the pioneers of swamp blues, he helped pave the way for subsequent generations of musicians. His unique sound and style continue to inspire new artists, ensuring that his legacy endures long after his passing.

This clip serves as a poignant reminder of Lazy Lester's contributions to American roots music. By witnessing him in action, we're not only treated to an exceptional performance but also gain insight into the creative process behind one of his most iconic songs. As such, "Lazy Lester - St Louis Blues(take 1)" is a must-see for anyone interested in blues history and its evolution over time.
