Episode 48 Lori Barbero

Sub Pop
1980s1987LessonDrum LessonRare

In 1987, Lori Barbero wanted to learn how to play drums and start a band. That same year, she attended a Minneapolis barbecue where she met singer/guitarist Kat Bjelland. Even though Barbero was not a drummer at the time she convinced Kat to form the iconic ‘90s band, Babes in Toyland. The rest, is music history. Babes played together for 14 years (Courtney Love and Jennifer Finch were members briefly). They put out a single for Sub Pop‘s singles club, released three albums, and traveled the world before disbanding in 2001. After Babes in Toyland broke up, Lori played drums for the bands Eggtwist and Koalas. She was also part owner of the Minneapolis label Spanish Fly Records, whose roster included Smut, Dumpster Juice, Milk, REO Speedealer, Sleep Capsule, and Likehell. Currently, Lori lives in Minneapolis and is working on a photo book that is going to be a collection of her vast archive.

About This Footage

The 1987 footage featuring Lori Barbero, "Episode 48 Lori Barbero," is a rare gem that offers a unique glimpse into the early days of Babes in Toyland's formation. The clip, which clocks in at 44:35 minutes, is tagged as both a drum lesson) and guitar lesson, suggesting an informal setting where Barbero was seeking guidance on both instruments.

The context provided by the YouTube description paints a picture of a pivotal moment in Lori Barbero's life, where she was eager to learn how to play drums and start a band. Her chance encounter with Kat Bjelland at a Minneapolis barbecue would ultimately lead to the formation of Babes in Toyland, one of the most iconic bands of the 1990s grunge movement.

The significance of this footage lies not only in its rarity but also in its connection to the early days of Sub Pop, an independent record label that played a crucial role in popularizing grunge music. Founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in 1986, Sub Pop would go on to sign influential bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney, cementing their status as a key player in the Seattle music scene.

The fact that Barbero was not yet a drummer at the time of this lesson is particularly interesting. It highlights her determination and enthusiasm for music, which would ultimately lead to her becoming an integral part of Babes in Toyland's sound. The band's success can be attributed in part to their unique blend of grunge, punk, and riot grrrl influences, which resonated with a generation of young women.

The clip also provides insight into the DIY ethos that defined the early days of Sub Pop and the bands they signed. Babes in Toyland's formation was a testament to this spirit, where musicians like Barbero and Bjelland were driven by a passion for creating music rather than seeking commercial success.

After Babes in Toyland disbanded in 2001, Lori Barbero went on to play drums for other bands, including Eggtwist and Koalas. She also became part-owner of the Minneapolis label Spanish Fly Records, which showcased a diverse range of local talent. Today, Barbero is working on a photo book that will feature her extensive archive, offering a glimpse into her life beyond music.

The "Episode 48 Lori Barbero" clip serves as a fascinating footnote to the history of Babes in Toyland and the grunge movement as a whole. It offers a rare opportunity for fans to witness the early days of one of the most influential bands of the 1990s, and provides a testament to the enduring legacy of Sub Pop's commitment to supporting innovative and groundbreaking music.
