Experience exceptionally rare footage and photographs of Joe Willie Wilkins, one of the most influential yet least documented guitarists of the Delta blues tradition. Best known for his work on the King Biscuit Time radio program, Wilkins played a central role in shaping the sound behind some of the most important figures in blues history. This collection captures Wilkins in two rare filmed appearances: 📍 September 25, 1976 — The Back Door, San Diego State University (CA) An intimate, quiet solo performance that reveals Wilkins’ understated power: strong time, relaxed phrasing, and deep Delta vocabulary carried without excess volume or flash. 🎺 1976 — Monterey Jazz Festival A rare festival appearance, first solo , then with James Cotton on harmonica, documenting Wilkins in a full performance setting while maintaining the grounding role he was known for throughout his career. These recordings are especially significant because Wilkins was most often heard—not seen—working behind blues legends such as Rice Miller, Robert Lockwood Jr., Willie Love, Pinetop Perkins, Houston Stackhouse, Robert Dudlow, Peck Curtis, and many others during the golden era of regional blues radio. 🎓 Educational Use Only This footage and photo archive is presented for educational and historical purposes. It offers rare visual insight into Wilkins’ playing style, stage presence, and musical role—helping fill a major gap in the visual documentation of post-war Delta and early Chicago blues. 📺 Source & Historical Context The material is connected to the in-depth interviews and historical documentation found here, which explore the legacy of King Biscuit Time and its musicians: 🔗 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9uMcn0Ieuw Whether you are a blues historian, musician, or listener seeking the real working-band context behind the music, this archive provides a rare and invaluable window into one of the Delta’s most essential guitar voices.
