Lynda almost went to RISD but the Antioch catalog that captured her interest showed a school of fish going one direction and one fish going the opposite way. When she visited campus and saw the Art Building, she was hooked. She took all kinds of art classes, then in her last year, a puppetry class with Amy Trompeter inspired Lynda to combine studio arts with theater. In the Backstage video, among other things, she talks about heading up the puppet department for The Lion King on Broadway where she has worked since 2016.

About This Footage

[Behind the Scenes](/tag/behind-the-scenes) of an Unlikely Encounter

In a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of School of Fish's Lynda White, this 1988 footage offers a candid look at the artist's creative process and influences. Recorded in June 2024, "Backstage with Lynda White" is a 52-minute conversation that delves into the artist's formative years, her decision to pursue art over music, and the unexpected path that led her to become a puppetry expert.

At the time of this recording, School of Fish was still an emerging alternative rock band, fresh off their debut album in 1991. Their hit single "3 Strange Days" had just begun to make waves on college radio stations, but it's clear from Lynda's conversation that she was already exploring other creative avenues. Her decision not to pursue music as a career is all the more intriguing given the band's nascent success.

The footage itself is remarkable for its unstructured nature. Unlike the polished interviews and promotional materials often associated with musicians, this recording feels like an honest, off-the-cuff conversation between friends. Lynda's candidness about her early interests in art, her struggles to balance creative pursuits, and her eventual decision to combine studio arts with theater makes for a compelling watch.

What's particularly notable is the way Lynda credits her time at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) with shaping her artistic vision. Her fascination with the Antioch catalog's illustration of a school of fish – where one fish moves in harmony while another diverges from the group – sparked an interest in art that would eventually lead to her work on Broadway productions like The Lion King.

This clip is significant not only for its candid portrayal of Lynda White but also as a testament to the diverse creative paths available to artists. In an era where musicians are often expected to conform to specific genres or styles, School of Fish's willingness to experiment and explore different mediums is refreshing. Lynda's journey from music to puppetry serves as a reminder that artistic expression can take many forms.

As viewers watch "Backstage with Lynda White," they'll gain a deeper understanding of the artist's creative process and influences. They'll also be struck by the unexpected twists and turns that have led her to become a respected expert in her field. The footage is a poignant reminder that art, like life itself, is full of unexpected detours and discoveries.

Ultimately, this clip offers a rare glimpse into the life of an artist who has defied expectations and carved out her own unique path. It's a testament to the power of creative exploration and the importance of staying true to one's artistic vision – even when it leads down unconventional roads.
