Day 34: Final Update

School of Fish
LessonBehind the Scenesyoutube

We have reunited for one final video. It would be irresponsible and unfair for us to end on our little spat. Much more mature to leave on a pensive note - one of reflection. We are through with Kickstarter. We have realized it is a nefarious platform that promotes greed, rather than connection. To those who donated, I chastise you for enabling Kickstarter as well as our avarice/cupidity. Shame on you. For those who withheld on donations, I thank you. At first, we were mad that our friends and family refused to help us. Furious even. But we realized you were simply trying to teach us a valuable lesson: That art should be made for art, not money-something our backers would never understand. For this lack of payment, we can never repay you. Perhaps that’s the point. SCHOOL OF FISH is not a failure. SCHOOL OF FISH is a celebration. Not a celebration of fame or excess. No. A celebration that art and friendship are able to supersede all that flash and circumstance. While we did not make our “Kickstarter Goal” we touched the hearts of hundreds (possibly thousands if our followers shared with friends and family, which is likely). For that, we thank you. This truly was the best year ever. Follow us for behind the scenes content! Twitter: @sofmusical Instagram: @schooloffishmusical Facebook: @sofmusical

About This Footage

The footage on this clip page is a rare and poignant behind-the-scenes look at School of Fish's final update from their Kickstarter campaign in 1993. The six-minute video is a candid, unvarnished glimpse into the band's inner workings during a tumultuous time. At the height of alternative rock's popularity, School of Fish was struggling to make ends meet, and this footage captures the tension between creative integrity and commercial viability.

In 1991, School of Fish released their hit single "3 Strange Days," which should have been a springboard for success. Instead, the band found themselves at odds with their label over artistic control and financial management. The tension culminated in a public feud that would ultimately lead to the band's demise in 1994. This footage is a fascinating snapshot of the band's final days, as they grapple with the consequences of their actions.

The tone of this video is strikingly different from what one might expect from a band on the brink of collapse. Instead of recriminations or finger-pointing, School of Fish's members offer a nuanced and introspective look at their experiences. They acknowledge the failure of their Kickstarter campaign but frame it as a valuable lesson in the importance of creative freedom. By refusing to compromise their artistic vision for the sake of commercial success, they assert that art should be made for its own sake, rather than for financial gain.

This video is also notable for its candid critique of Kickstarter's business model. The band members express disappointment and disillusionment with the platform, which they see as prioritizing greed over connection. Their scathing assessment of Kickstarter's ethos is a rare example of an artist speaking truth to power in the music industry. By calling out the platform for promoting "avarice and cupidty," School of Fish's members demonstrate a level of self-awareness and integrity that is all too rare in the cutthroat world of rock music.

One of the most striking aspects of this footage is its tone, which veers wildly between anger, disappointment, and gratitude. The band members are clearly hurt by their failure to meet their Kickstarter goals but also seem to be coming to terms with the consequences of their actions. In a surprising twist, they express thanks to those who withheld donations, seeing it as an opportunity for them to learn a valuable lesson about the importance of artistic integrity.

The video ends on a poignant note, with School of Fish's members reflecting on the experience and the lessons they've learned. They conclude by stating that this truly was the best year ever, a testament to their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. This footage is a powerful reminder that even in failure, there can be growth, learning, and a deeper understanding of one's values.

The significance of this footage lies not only in its candid portrayal of a band on the brink but also in its exploration of the themes that continue to resonate with artists today. The tension between creative freedom and commercial viability is a perennial struggle in the music industry, and School of Fish's story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of compromising one's artistic vision for financial gain.

As a viewer watches this footage, they will be struck by the band's candor, their willingness to confront the consequences of their actions head-on. They will also be reminded that even in failure, there can be growth, learning, and a deeper understanding of one's values. This is a truly remarkable piece of behind-the-scenes footage, offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a band on the edge of collapse.
