About This Footage

The VPRO Radio Recordings From The Dutch Chicago Blues Festivals 1983 Part Two is a treasure trove of rare and unseen footage that sheds light on the rich musical landscape of the early 1980s. This particular clip, clocking in at 45:15 minutes, presents an intriguing mix of American blues legends and lesser-known acts.

The highlight of this compilation lies in its documentation of Lonnie Pitchford's performance at the Chicago Blues Festival in Amsterdam. As one of the last remaining Delta blues musicians from Mississippi, Pitchford was a vital link to the past, carrying on the traditions of Robert Johnson, Son House, and Charlie Patton. His rendition of "My Babe" showcases his mastery over the guitar, while "The One String Boogie" demonstrates his innovative approach to instrumentation.

Pitchford's presence is all the more remarkable considering that he passed away in 1998, leaving behind a legacy as an instrument maker and blues musician. The fact that this footage has been preserved and made available online is a testament to the dedication of music archivists and enthusiasts who strive to keep these rare performances alive.

In contrast, the Johnny Mars Band's instrumental track and Albert Collins & The Icebreakers' performance are more representative of the commercialized blues sound that was gaining popularity in the early 1980s. While not as historically significant as Pitchford's contributions, these acts still add to the musical tapestry of this era.

What is striking about this footage is its connection to the Dutch music scene. The VPRO Radio Recordings were presented by Wim Noordhoek, a Dutch radio personality who played a pivotal role in introducing American blues to a European audience. This exchange between cultures had far-reaching consequences, influencing the development of various musical genres and paving the way for future collaborations.

Ride, the British shoegaze band mentioned in the clip's metadata, is not directly related to this footage. Their inclusion might seem out of place at first glance, but it highlights the eclectic nature of music archives like DeepCutsArchive. By juxtaposing seemingly disparate acts and eras, these collections provide a unique perspective on the evolution of popular music.

The rarity of this footage underscores its importance as a historical document. The VPRO Radio Recordings From The Dutch Chicago Blues Festivals 1983 Part Two offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of blues legends like Lonnie Pitchford, whose contributions to American musical heritage are still celebrated today. This clip serves as a poignant reminder that even in the digital age, there is value in preserving and sharing these rare recordings for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
