“Every Breath You Take”, words and music by Sting, 1983 as performed by The Police, from Synchronicity, 1983 The BHCC Popular Music Ensemble, Spring 2022 Bota Chen - drums Lewis McCaskill - bass, backing vocals Ahmad Orfali - electric guitar Sofia Padilla Garcia - keyboards, backing vocals Carlos Parada Araujo - keyboards, backing vocals Ba Pham - keyboards, backing vocals Nico Shihade - lead vocals, electric guitar James Waters - vibraphone Mark Popeney - electric guitar, backing vocals “Every Breath You Take” is described as “very, very sinister” by Sting, who wrote and composed the song. Sting wrote the song after his separation from his then wife Frances Tomelty. Sting himself insists the song is about the obsession of a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follows. While many misinterpret the song to be a love song, it is quite the opposite. After listening to the lyrics carefully, many people have realized that the song is actually told from a stalker’s point of view, watching and obsessing over the woman he loves - watching her every move, every breath, every step, and every word. He then asks her why she couldn’t see that she belongs to him. The words can be very unsettling to some. - notes by Ahmad Orfali The Bunker Hill Community College Popular Music Ensemble Mark Popeney, director Video recording by K.
