Find William Bell, The Very Best of William Bell, wherever you buy or stream music: https://found.ee/verybestofwilliambell-pivot-g Bell was among a small group of musical artists who signed with Stax Records in the early 1960s, shortly after it was established in a shuttered movie theater. As the first male solo act signed to Stax, Bell played a pivotal role in ushering in the genre known as Southern soul. His solo debut, 1961's self-penned weeper "You Don't Miss Your Water," would provide the template for the Southern soul ballad and helped launch Stax to national prominence. The song would be covered by a remarkable range of artists over the years, from John Lee Hooker to the Byrds, Brian Eno to Jerry Lee Lewis. The 2007 compilation The Very Best of William Bell covers the best of his Stax recordings. The AllMusic review of the collection revealed, “Bell wasn’t afraid to mix pure country elements into the deep soul stew, as ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ shows, and his 1967 hit ‘Everybody Loves a Winner’ is as much Merle Haggard as it is Otis Redding. ‘Eloise (Hang on In There),’ another Bell/Jones collaboration, sounds like a great, lost Four Tops song, and is one of the many highlights on this revealing anthology, which works not only as an introduction to this underrated artist but also as a solid survey of his top moments.” ABOUT STAX RECORDS Stax Records, now owned by Concord, was founded by Jim Stewart in 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee. It rose from a small, family-operated company to become one of the most influential soul music record labels in the world, helping create “The Memphis Sound” and launching the careers of icons such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, The Bar-Kays, and dozens of other artists who helped change popular culture forever. In all, Stax placed 167 hit songs in the Top 100 in Pop and 243 hits in the Top 100 in R&B. Stax Records works closely with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School, all operated by the Soulsville Foundation and all located on a vibrant campus at the original site of Stax Records in Memphis, TN. The Soulsville Foundation perpetuates the soul of Stax Records by preserving its rich cultural legacy, educating youth to be prepared for life success, and inspiring future artists to achieve their dreams. About The Staple Singers

The Staple Singers was an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples, the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis. Yvonne replaced her brother when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and again in 1970. They are best known for their 1970s hits "Respect Yourself", "I'll Take You There", "If You're Ready ", and "Let's Do It Again". While the family name is Staples, the group used "Staple" commercially.
