Pain In My Heart - Dells - 1956
The Dells were formed in 1953 while in high school in Harvey, Illinois. The original lineup of Marvin Junior, Mickey McGill, Chuck Barksdale, Verne Allison, and Johnny Funches were known as the El-Rays and released their first recordings in 1954. They changed their name to the Dells and had a huge hit with, Oh What A Night, in 1956. Pain In My Heart, written by Junior and Funches, was a follow up single to, Oh What A Night, and one of a flurry of releases the group had from 1956 until 1958, when a car crash temporarily put a hold on their recording career. Funches left the group at that time and was replaced by Johnny Carter in 1960 and the original four members plus Carter would go on to record together for the next 49 years until 2009 when Carter passed away.
