About This Footage

The 1972 single "If It's Good To You (It's Good For You)" by Barbara Brown is a rare gem that has been unearthed from the depths of vinyl obscurity. This short clip, clocking in at just 2:14, is a tantalizing glimpse into the world of soul music during its golden era.

At the time this footage was filmed, Barbara Brown was an emerging talent on the US music scene. Born in Montréal but with roots in American rhythm and blues, Brown's unique blend of funk and soul was starting to make waves in the industry. As a vocalist, she had already begun to establish herself as a force to be reckoned with, delivering powerful performances that showcased her impressive range.

What makes this clip so remarkable is its rarity. With only a handful of Barbara Brown's recordings available on vinyl, "If It's Good To You (It's Good For You)" stands out as a prized find for collectors and enthusiasts alike. The fact that it has been uploaded to YouTube under the label "Rare" serves as a testament to its scarcity.

But what does this clip reveal about Barbara Brown's artistry? Listen closely, and you'll hear the unmistakable influence of Motown on her sound. As a vocalist, she channels the classic style of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, yet brings her own distinct flavor to the table. Her delivery is confident and soulful, with a subtle hint of playfulness that sets her apart from her contemporaries.

This clip also offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 1970s soul music production. The backing track, courtesy of the legendary Funk Brothers, provides a lush and atmospheric backdrop for Brown's vocals. The arrangement is classic Motown – think "My Girl" or "Dancing in the Street" – with its signature blend of horns, strings, and driving rhythms.

Watching this clip, viewers will be struck by Barbara Brown's charisma on stage. She exudes confidence and energy, working the crowd with a subtle yet effective charm. It's clear that she was born to perform, and her passion for music shines through in every note.
