#classicrock #keithlevene #punkrockmusic Keith Levene, the innovative guitarist who was a founder member of both the Clash and Public Image Ltd, has died at the age of 65. Levene, who had liver cancer, died at his home in Norfolk , leaving a lasting legacy of influence on British rock music. Author Adam Hammond confirmed the punk pioneer’s passing in a Saturday statement on Twitter. “It is with great sadness I report that my close friend and legendary Public Image Limited guitarist Keith Levene passed away on Friday 11th November,” he wrote. “There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time.” Born in 1957 in London, Levene got his start as a roadie for Yes as a teenager in the early 1970s. He achieved fame after forming The Clash with guitarist Mick Jones and bassist Paul Simonon at just 18 years old. It was Levene and manager Bernard Rhodes who convinced vocalist Joe Strummer, then the frontman for the 101ers, to join the band. While he saw early success with The Clash, Levene grew tired of their political songs and exited before they started recording. He memorably contributed to “What’s My Name” on the band’s 1977 debut album. He would go on to co-form Public Image with Sex Pistols singer John Lydon (previously known as Johnny Rotten) and bass player John Wardle (known as Jah Wobble). Jim Walker was recruited on drums. Levene is survived by his sister, Jill Bennett, and his partner, Kate Ransford. Ransford wrote on Twitter, “RIP keith levene My beloved partner who passed away at our home on 11/11/22 peacefully, painfree, cosy n well loved. He was an iconic guitarist and composer, my best friend, my love, my everything, I love you to the moon.” https://www.discogs.com/master/155311-Keith-Levene-Violent-Opposition ********************************************************************** * The New Website ➜ https://www.adikalive.com/ Merchandise ➜https://adika-live.creator-spring.com The Ultimate VIP ALL ACCESS BACKSTAGE PASS Full episodes can be seen in Patreon! Keith Levene's Backstage Footage: A Glimpse into the Turbulent World of Post-Punk
In this rare and intimate 8:39 clip, Keith Levene, co-founder of Public Image Ltd and The Clash, is seen in a state of high tension. Filmed backstage, likely during one of his many performances with either band, Levene's presence exudes an air of creative turmoil. Born in London in 1957, Levene was already making waves in the early 1970s as a roadie for Yes, and by 18, he had co-founded The Clash alongside Mick Jones and Paul Simonon.
As we watch Levene navigate the chaos of his own making, it's clear that this is no ordinary musician. His innovative spirit and audacious approach to music would leave an indelible mark on British rock. But what makes this footage truly significant is its candid portrayal of a man at odds with himself. Levene's departure from The Clash in the late 1970s, after contributing to their debut album "What's My Name," marked a turning point in his career.
The clip provides a glimpse into the intense creative ferment that defined the post-punk era. Public Image Ltd, formed in June 1978 with John Lydon and Jah Wobble, would go on to push the boundaries of music even further, incorporating elements of dub and world music into their sound. Levene's time with both bands was marked by a restless energy, as he sought to break free from the constraints of traditional rock music.
This footage is more than just a rare look at a legendary musician – it's a testament to the unbridled creativity that defined the punk movement. As Adam Hammond so eloquently put it, "Keith Levene was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time." Watching him in this clip, we're reminded of the raw power and unflinching honesty that characterized the best of post-punk.
Levene's legacy extends far beyond his music. His influence can be seen in countless bands that followed in his footsteps, from The Sex Pistols to Joy Division. And yet, despite his impact on British rock, Levene remains a relatively unsung hero. This footage serves as a poignant reminder of the debt we owe to this trailblazing musician.
As we watch Levene navigate the backstage chaos, we're struck by his intensity and passion. He's a man driven by a fierce creative vision, unafraid to challenge the status quo or push boundaries. In an era marked by conformity and commercialism, Levene stood out as a true original – a maverick who refused to be bound by convention.
This clip is a must-watch for anyone interested in the post-punk era, but it's more than just a historical curiosity. It's a testament to the enduring power of creativity and innovation, even in the face of adversity. Levene may have left us too soon, but his music and legacy continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
As we reflect on Keith Levene's life and work, this footage serves as a poignant reminder of the impact one person can have on the world of music. His influence will be felt for years to come, and this clip provides a rare glimpse into the turbulent world of post-punk – a world that would never be the same without Keith Levene's innovative spirit and unbridled creativity.
