Mega-rare live concert from the early days of home video. "CHEECH AND CHONG PERFORM/PERFORM AGAIN (1978) Director: Not Applicable. Rated: Not Rated. Runtime: 50 minutes. This video contains the only commercially released footage of Cheech and Chong's stand-up act. It was released in 1978 and runs 84 mins. It was recorded at Spanky's comedy club just after Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong completed filming Up in Smoke. They even make a comment about not having to do stand-up anymore if they make a lot of money from the movie. There are actually two videos filmed the same night, Perform and Perform Again https://youtu.be/PCVwYJ9F6fU . You have to see the "square" 1970s clothing Tommy is wearing. It's bizarre. The Perform video contains the following sketches: • Chinese Restaurant - Chong is a waiter at a Chinese restaurant who must communicate with a Superfly-esque black man who's eating at the restaurant. • Queer Wars - Similar to the bit in Still Smokin. However, this one is more raw and funnier. Basically, it's two gays interacting with a StarWars theme. They use dildo guns to shoot the bad guys. • Low Rider - This is the onstage re-enactment of the legendary first scene of Up in Smoke. Cheech is wearing the same outfit (except for the hat). It starts with Cheech entering his car with Low Rider playing and ends with Chong throwing up in Cheech's lap as the cop asks for his name. RALPHHHHH! The dialogue is different and there are a lot more jokes, jokes that were not included in Up in Smoke. • Harry Palms - Similar to the bit in Still Smokin. However, it's a little different and there's more improvisation. • Ralph and Herbie - Cheech and Chong pretend like they're dogs. This bit appeared on the Sleeping Beauty album, among others." - cheecandchongfans.com ------ Posted for historical purposes. I do not own the rights. The raw, unbridled energy of Cheech and Chong's stand-up act in 1978 is a time capsule of counterculture humor that still holds up today. This footage, recorded at Spanky's comedy club just after the duo completed filming Up in Smoke, is a rare gem that offers a glimpse into the irreverent spirit of the late 1970s.
At this point in their careers, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong were on the cusp of mainstream success with their film debut. Up in Smoke had already begun to gain traction, and it's clear from this footage that they were still riding high on the momentum of their underground following. The jokes, sketches, and antics on display are a testament to their innovative brand of humor, which blurred the lines between comedy, satire, and social commentary.
One of the most striking aspects of this footage is the way it captures the duo's improvisational skills. In sketches like "Queer Wars" and "Harry Palms," Chong and Marin trade witty banter and engage in outrageous antics that showcase their ability to think on their feet. These moments are all the more impressive considering they were recorded at a time when the duo was still refining their act.
The "Low Rider" sketch, which re-enacts the iconic opening scene of Up in Smoke, is another highlight of this footage. Cheech's deadpan delivery and Chong's over-the-top antics create a hilarious dynamic that sets the tone for the rest of the performance. It's also interesting to note how this version differs from its film counterpart, with additional jokes and improvisations that add to the comedic value.
What makes this footage truly remarkable is the context in which it was recorded. Spanky's comedy club was a hub for emerging comedians and musicians in the late 1970s, and it's clear that Chong and Marin were part of a vibrant community of artists pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in mainstream comedy.
Watching this footage today, one can't help but be struck by the fashion sense of the era. Tommy Chong's "square" 1970s clothing is indeed bizarre, with its flared pants, polyester shirt, and chunky jewelry. It's a visual reminder that even the most iconic comedians were once products of their time.
This footage is also significant because it provides a rare glimpse into the creative process of Cheech and Chong during this period. The sketches and jokes on display are raw, unpolished, and often outrageous, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how they developed their unique brand of humor.
For fans of comedy and counterculture history, this footage is a treasure trove of laughs and insights into the making of one of the most iconic comedy duos of all time. It's a testament to the enduring power of Chong and Marin's irreverent humor, which continues to inspire new generations of comedians and artists.
As you watch Cheech and Chong Perform (1978) | Live at Spanky's Part 1, you'll be transported back to a bygone era of counterculture excess and creative experimentation. The energy is infectious, the jokes are still funny, and the historical significance is undeniable.
