Mega-rare live concert from the early days of home video. "CHEECH AND CHONG PERFORM/PERFORM AGAIN (1978) Director: Not Applicable. Rated: Not Rated. Runtime: 50 minutes. This video contains the only commercially released footage of Cheech and Chong's stand-up act. It was released in 1978 and runs 84 mins. It was recorded at Spanky's comedy club just after Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong completed filming Up in Smoke. They even make a comment about not having to do stand-up anymore if they make a lot of money from the movie. There are actually two videos filmed the same night, Perform and Perform Again https://youtu.be/PCVwYJ9F6fU . You have to see the "square" 1970s clothing Tommy is wearing. It's bizarre. The Perform video contains the following sketches: • Chinese Restaurant - Chong is a waiter at a Chinese restaurant who must communicate with a Superfly-esque black man who's eating at the restaurant. • Queer Wars - Similar to the bit in Still Smokin. However, this one is more raw and funnier. Basically, it's two gays interacting with a StarWars theme. They use dildo guns to shoot the bad guys. • Low Rider - This is the onstage re-enactment of the legendary first scene of Up in Smoke. Cheech is wearing the same outfit (except for the hat). It starts with Cheech entering his car with Low Rider playing and ends with Chong throwing up in Cheech's lap as the cop asks for his name. RALPHHHHH! The dialogue is different and there are a lot more jokes, jokes that were not included in Up in Smoke. • Harry Palms - Similar to the bit in Still Smokin. However, it's a little different and there's more improvisation. • Ralph and Herbie - Cheech and Chong pretend like they're dogs. This bit appeared on the Sleeping Beauty album, among others." - cheecandchongfans.com ------ Posted for historical purposes. I do not own the rights. The unbridled energy of Tommy Chong's stand-up act in 1978 is a breath of fresh air, a time capsule that captures the raw humor and irreverence of two counterculture icons at the height of their powers. This footage, recorded live at Spanky's comedy club, is a rare gem that offers a glimpse into the early days of home video and the creative process behind Cheech and Chong's groundbreaking film, Up in Smoke.
At this point in time, Tommy Chong was already making waves as a comedian and actor, but it was his collaboration with Cheech Marin on Up in Smoke that catapulted him to stardom. The film's success can be attributed in part to the duo's ability to tap into the zeitgeist of the late 1970s, embracing the counterculture movement and its rejection of mainstream values. This live performance at Spanky's comedy club is a testament to their irreverent spirit and willingness to push boundaries.
One of the most striking aspects of this footage is Tommy Chong's fashion sense – or lack thereof. His "square" 1970s clothing, as described in the YouTube description, is indeed bizarre, but it adds to the charm of this performance. The contrast between his outlandish attire and the raw humor on display creates a visually striking image that will stick with viewers long after the footage ends.
The sketches themselves are a masterclass in comedic timing and improvisation. From the hilarious "Chinese Restaurant" sketch, where Chong struggles to communicate with a Superfly-esque black man, to the raunchy "Queer Wars" bit, which uses dildo guns to shoot Star Wars villains, each performance is a testament to the duo's ability to think outside the box and push the envelope. The inclusion of sketches like "Low Rider," an onstage re-enactment of the iconic Up in Smoke scene, only adds to the sense of nostalgia and historical significance.
What makes this footage truly remarkable is its rarity. As noted on the YouTube description, this is one of the only commercially released recordings of Cheech and Chong's stand-up act from this era. The fact that it was recorded at Spanky's comedy club just after the completion of Up in Smoke adds an extra layer of significance, as it captures the duo's creative process and their ability to adapt their material for a live audience.
Watching this footage is like stepping into a time machine, transporting viewers back to the vibrant comedy scene of 1970s Los Angeles. It's a reminder that even at the height of their fame, Cheech and Chong remained committed to pushing boundaries and challenging social norms. As we watch Tommy Chong's antics on stage, it's impossible not to be drawn into the infectious energy of his performance, an energy that continues to captivate audiences to this day.
The image that lingers long after the footage ends is that of Tommy Chong, resplendent in his "square" 1970s finery, careening through a series of hilarious sketches with Cheech Marin. It's a testament to their enduring legacy as comedians and actors who refused to be bound by conventional norms, and it serves as a reminder that even the most outrageous humor can have a lasting impact on popular culture.
