Nordic Music Journeys, RSNO New Auditorium, Glasgow January 2024 Time's Arrow is originally a live piece that has developed in several iterations into a fixed media piece. It was scored for a live electronic instrument and with a variable fixed media backgrounds. In this concert in Glasgow, it is a fixed media piece arranged for 4 channel surround sound. The composition "Time's Arrow" was inspired by the launch of the James Webb Telescope in December 2021 and eludes to the theory of space's expansion and final "Big Chill", but also to the psychological passage of time in the realm of volition and action. ”The increase of disorder or entropy is what distinguishes the past from the future, giving a direction to time.” (Hawkins 1988) “Time's Arrow” is structured it into three converging layers (stems): i. Disorder ii. Expansion iii. Nothingness ”Disorder” is a layer of noise fields, built on rapidly moving microsound particles of different density. ”Expansion” is the sparse and reoccurring dissonant and syncopated bass/Theremin motif first heard in the opening. ”Nothingness” is a layer of web-like melodic pitch fields built on sustained choir-like microtonal layers. The three layers converge in and out each other into an organic and dynamic entropy, giving the music direction and form, between order and disorder. The piece was composed with analog electronic instruments, such as: Theremin, Buchla Music Easel, a radio, Wing Pinger and diverse Eurorack synthesizer modules and effect pedals. It was first performed live with a fixed media part on Fylkingen in Stockholm, Sweden the 18 November 2021 originally entitled ”The Dark Era Revisited”. With showcase concerts from contemporary music specialists Gageego! (Sweden) providing a snapshot of the latest new music from both countries. Presented by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in collaboration with Föreningen Svenska Tonsättare (Sweden's society of composers), the event is supported by Sweden's performing rights society, STIM.
