Eliza Carthy Band : Mr Magnifico : Monto Water Rats 18 March 2010

The Eliza Carthy Band play Mr Magnifico at the legendary Monto Water Rats in Gray's Inn Road, London on 18 March 2010. Eliza and the band played a set that not only featured most of the superb, largely, self-penned, Dreams of Breathing Underwater album (including the song featured here), but also played a handful of new songs, destined for the next album. If you haven't heard Dreams of Breathing Underwater, but like what you are hearing here, I suggest that you give it a go. I liked it so much I bought it twice! Thats not quite as crazy as it sounds though. I bought it on CD when it first came out in 2008 and when it was re-mastered & re-issued on 180 gram vinyl with a bonus 7" single earlier this year - I bought it again! The vinyl version is a thing of great beauty btw - so if you are a vinyl junkie, seek it out; it sounds amazing!

About This Footage

In the dimly lit Monto Water Rats in Gray's Inn Road, London on March 18th, 2010, Eliza Carthy and her band took to the stage, their energy palpable as they launched into the infectious "Mr Magnifico". This footage is a rare glimpse into the vibrant folk scene of early 2010s London, a time when artists like Carthy were pushing the boundaries of traditional music.

At this point in her career, Eliza Carthy was already an established figure in the English folk scene. Her debut album, "Red Sky at Night", had been released to critical acclaim in 1995, and she had since become known for her unique fiddle-singing style. However, it's worth noting that "Dreams of Breathing Underwater" (2008) marked a significant shift in Carthy's sound, as she began to incorporate more contemporary influences into her music.

This live performance at the Monto Water Rats is notable not only for its high energy but also for the fact that it showcases material from both "Dreams of Breathing Underwater" and new, unreleased songs. The band's chemistry is undeniable, with each member feeding off the others' energy to create a truly immersive experience.

What makes this clip so significant is that it provides a window into Carthy's creative process at a pivotal moment in her career. As she prepares to release new material, she and her band are experimenting with fresh sounds and styles, laying the groundwork for what would come next. For fans of folk music, this footage offers a unique opportunity to witness an artist on the cusp of innovation.

Watching "Mr Magnifico" performed live is a testament to Carthy's ability to craft infectious, danceable songs that also showcase her technical prowess as a fiddler and singer. Her voice soars above the band's driving rhythm section, imbuing the performance with a sense of joy and abandon. It's clear that this is an artist who is deeply connected to her music and her audience.

For those unfamiliar with Carthy's work, this clip provides an excellent introduction to her unique sound. While "Dreams of Breathing Underwater" may not have received widespread critical acclaim at the time of its release, it has since been recognized as a landmark album in the folk genre. This footage serves as a reminder that even in 2010, Carthy was already pushing the boundaries of what was possible within traditional music.

As the performance reaches its climax, Eliza Carthy's voice rises above the din, her fiddle singing weaving together the various elements of the song into a rich tapestry. It's a truly exhilarating experience, one that captures the raw energy and creativity of live music at its best. Watching this clip is like being there in person, surrounded by the sweat-drenched crowd and the pulsating rhythms emanating from the stage.

In the end, "Eliza Carthy Band : Mr Magnifico" is more than just a rare piece of footage – it's a testament to an artist's innovative spirit and her ability to connect with audiences through music. As the final notes fade away, leaving only the echoes of applause and cheering, one thing becomes clear: Eliza Carthy is a true original, a master of her craft who continues to inspire and influence new generations of musicians and fans alike.
