A consistent, highly regarded Los Angeles R&B vocalist who worked with such notable Californian Soul names as Bob Keene, Johnny Watson, Cliff Goldsmith, Ray Shanklin, during the early 60's eventually coming under the guidance of the great Arthur Wright in the summer of 1968. Between them crafting two superior soul sessions; that have grown in reputation through the decades, from strong Northern Soul attention for the "Wishing And Hoping". An enchanting NS Crossover delicacy, driven by considerate horns, pounding piano notes prompting the dance pulses, lifted by relentless shaking of the subtle tambourine embellishments. The horns building in unison with Billy Keene's beseeching pleas to capture his girl's complete love; leading to a magnificent crescendo for everyone involved in this fabulous Kenny Seymour composition. The other side which led the June 1968 release for this normally Surf/Jazz/Rock oriented Vault Records, was a killer Lowrider Soul ballad. A reworking of the 1953 Memphis ballad written by Johnny Ace and David James Mattis recorded by Johnny Ace and released on Duke Records. Whilst still retaining the beauty of the early 50's sentimental lyrics. Billy Keene elevates the song to new levels of male pleading and promise making. A killer remake that today is considered a distilled example of late 60's Los Angeles Soul. The recordings did receive a second lease of life two years later after Vault folded in the fall of 1969, purchased by Milwaukee based National Tape Distributors, who got Shreveport, Louisiana based Paula Records to re-issue the record in 1970.
