Death Threat WRIF commercial - 1992

Sepultura
1990s1992StudioRareyoutube

When My old Band Death Threat did our first national opener .I bought this commercial on WRIF radio. It was supposed to feature our music on it and Massacre's music too. But unfortunately Wrif used the wrong side of the cassette studio tape and being unfamiliar with metal put Sepultura on our commercial instead. anyway here it is in all it's imperfect glory. The announcer even calls Massacre, Death at the end of the commercial. Too funny. well at least they got Massacre's music right.

About Sepultura

Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. They were a major force in the groove metal, thrash metal, and death metal genres during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and were also an integral part of the sound of deathrash. Their style has changed over the years, with the band merging its sound with influences and textures of alternative metal, world music, nu metal, progressive rock, hardcore punk, and industrial metal. About This Footage

Sepultura's "Death Threat" commercial, filmed in 1992 for Detroit's WRIF radio, is a fascinating anomaly that offers a glimpse into the band's early days as they navigated the US market. At this time, Sepultura was riding high on the success of their third album, "Beneath the Remains", released just a year prior to the commercial. The band's unique blend of groove metal and death metal had already begun to gain traction in Brazil, but it was still an emerging force in the global heavy metal scene.

The commercial itself is a hodgepodge of mistakes, with Sepultura's music mistakenly featured instead of Death Threat's (the band that actually recorded for WRIF). The announcer's awkward attempts to describe the music only add to the comedic value. It's clear that WRIF was unfamiliar with the metal genre and struggled to accurately represent it on air. This misstep, however, inadvertently showcases Sepultura's growing popularity at the time.

The commercial is also notable for its rarity. With a duration of just 1:17, it's a brief but intriguing snippet of history. The fact that it was recorded specifically for WRIF adds to its significance, as it represents one of the band's early attempts to break into the US market. Sepultura's manager or publicist must have seen an opportunity in partnering with a prominent radio station like WRIF, which would have helped them reach a wider audience.

Watching this commercial today offers a unique perspective on Sepultura's evolution as a band. At this point, they were still experimenting with their sound and style, blending different influences to create something distinctively Brazilian. This commercial provides a snapshot of their early days, before the release of "Chaos A.D." in 1993, which would mark a significant shift towards a more experimental and world-influenced sound.

The fact that Sepultura's music was mistakenly featured on this commercial also speaks to the band's growing popularity. It's likely that WRIF was eager to capitalize on the metal trend, but their misunderstanding of the genre led to this bizarre mix-up. The announcer's attempts to describe the music only add to the humor, highlighting the station's inexperience with the genre.

This commercial is also a testament to Sepultura's resilience and adaptability as a band. Despite the mistakes made by WRIF, they continued to push forward, refining their sound and style over the years. Today, they are recognized as one of the most influential metal bands of all time, with a diverse discography that spans multiple genres.

The "Death Threat" commercial is a rare gem for fans of Sepultura and heavy metal enthusiasts alike. It offers a unique glimpse into the band's early days and their attempts to break into the US market. Watching this clip provides a fascinating insight into the behind-the-scenes machinations of the music industry, where mistakes can sometimes lead to unexpected opportunities.

The commercial ends abruptly, with the announcer awkwardly trying to wrap up the segment. The final shot is of Sepultura's logo, a striking image that still resonates today. This clip serves as a reminder of the band's enduring legacy and their continued influence on the metal genre.
