LONNIE DONEGAN - BLUES ROOTS Blues music documentary of Lonnie Donegan recorded in concert by Blues Archive in 1997. Lonnie Donegan was a musical phenomenon. In the 1950s, his innovative arrangements of traditional black American music introduced blues, work songs and spirituals to a younger generation in Britain having a profound effect on many emerging and now famous musicians. He changed his stage name to Lonnie, after his idol, blues guitarist Lonnie Johnson, popularising him and other artists such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie. During the 1950s and 1960s, he pioneered skiffle music and was probably responsible for more people taking up playing the guitar than anyone else. He was the first British pop superstar and the founding father of British pop music. With his hit single, Rock Island Line in 1955, which sold over one million copies, he was the spark that ignited a whole new direction in British music. Lonnie Donegan was an iconic figure whose music was deeply rooted in the blues. DIRECTED AND PRODUCED - PAUL REED Available from Amazon Prime Video.
Anthony James "Lonnie" Donegan was a British skiffle singer, songwriter and musician, referred to as the "King of Skiffle", who influenced 1960s British pop and rock musicians. Born in Scotland and brought up in England, Donegan began his career in the British trad jazz revival, but transitioned to skiffle in the mid-1950s, rising to prominence with a hit recording of the American folk song "Rock Island Line", which helped spur the broader UK skiffle movement.
