I Don't Want To Be Like My Daddy - Nightingales - 1971
I Don't Want To Be Like My Daddy, features an impassioned lead vocal from Tommy Tate, filling in with the Nightingales following the departure of their previous lead singer, Ollie Hoskins. When Hoskins left to go solo, the Nightingales had no lead singer and a recording session booked at Stax. Tate was asked to join them for the session and they cut several singles but Tate never officially joined the group. Two of the singles they cut that day were among the best of the decade at Stax. Just A Little Overcome, is one of my favorites and this one, I Don't Want To Be Like My Daddy, written by the departed Hoskins and Mack Rice, ranks a close second. Neither made any kind of chart action but that doesn't diminish from the impact both songs have on me to this day.
