This year marks the anniversary of their 1997 self-titled debut album, which included the hit single “Sex and Candy”. In celebration of the anniversary, Slow Down Sounds will release the album on vinyl for the first time ever. The album went platinum back in 1997, selling 1.4 million copies, while the radio classic “Sex and Candy” spent a then record 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. In the interim years Marcy Playground has released four posterior albums “Shapeshifter” (1999), “Marcy Playground 3” (MP3) (2004), “Leaving Wonderland… In A Fit of Rage” (2009), and “Lunch, Recess, and Detention” (2012). The albums demonstrated tremendous periods of creative growth for the group and are recognized as “cult classics” among the band’s dedicated fans. The band has also enjoyed notice by the big screen. Their songs are featured on soundtracks such as Cruel Intentions, Antitrust, Simply Irresistible, Hurricane Streets, as well as many films by writer/director Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Zack and Miri Make a Porno). Marcy Playground has been off the road since the summer of 2012, when they played the inaugural Summerland Tour. The band is looking forward to getting back out on the road this summer. They are planning tour stops across the nation as part of the Rockin’ Roadtrip tour with Fuel, Dishwalla, and more.

About This Footage

Garden Sessions: A [Rare](/tag/rare) Glimpse into Marcy Playground's Creative Process

On October 12th, 2018, at City Winery New York, Marcy Playground sat down for a One On One Garden Session during The Underwater Sunshine Festival. This intimate performance is a rare treat for fans of the band, offering a glimpse into their creative process and camaraderie. The footage, which clocks in at 3:24, captures the essence of Marcy Playground's live sound, with John Wozniak's distinctive vocals and guitar work taking center stage.

At this point in time, Marcy Playground was celebrating two decades in the music industry. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1997, had reached platinum status, selling 1.4 million copies worldwide. The album's hit single, "Sex and Candy," spent a record-breaking 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. This achievement cemented Marcy Playground's place as one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 1990s.

The band's Garden Session performance features a stripped-down setlist, with songs like "Good Times" and "Rock And Roll Heroes" showcasing their ability to craft catchy, high-energy anthems. However, it's the quieter moments that truly reveal Marcy Playground's depth as songwriters. Tracks like "Everything I've Loved I've Left" and "Sherry Fraser" demonstrate a more introspective side of the band, with Wozniak's poignant lyrics and soaring vocals taking center stage.

What makes this footage particularly significant is its rarity. Marcy Playground has been off the road since 2012, and this performance offers a glimpse into their live sound during a period when they were still actively touring. The Underwater Sunshine Festival, where this session took place, was a celebration of alternative rock's rich history, with Marcy Playground joining forces with other iconic bands to pay tribute to the genre.

As viewers watch this footage, they'll be struck by the band's chemistry and camaraderie. Wozniak's banter with his bandmates is effortless, and their performances are infused with a sense of joy and spontaneity. This Garden Session performance is more than just a rare recording – it's a testament to Marcy Playground's enduring legacy as one of alternative rock's most beloved bands.

The release of Marcy Playground's self-titled debut album on vinyl for the first time ever is a fitting tribute to their 20-year anniversary in the music industry. As fans eagerly await their upcoming tour dates, this footage serves as a reminder of what makes Marcy Playground so special – their ability to craft infectious, memorable songs that continue to resonate with audiences today.

As John Wozniak quipped about "Sex and Candy," it needed its own accountant. Little did he know that the song's enduring popularity would be matched only by the band's dedication to their craft over two decades later. This Garden Session performance is a testament to Marcy Playground's commitment to creating music that matters, and we're lucky to have this rare glimpse into their creative process.
