This year marks the anniversary of their 1997 self-titled debut album, which included the hit single “Sex and Candy”. In celebration of the anniversary, Slow Down Sounds will release the album on vinyl for the first time ever. The album went platinum back in 1997, selling 1.4 million copies, while the radio classic “Sex and Candy” spent a then record 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. In the interim years Marcy Playground has released four posterior albums “Shapeshifter” (1999), “Marcy Playground 3” (MP3) (2004), “Leaving Wonderland… In A Fit of Rage” (2009), and “Lunch, Recess, and Detention” (2012). The albums demonstrated tremendous periods of creative growth for the group and are recognized as “cult classics” among the band’s dedicated fans. The band has also enjoyed notice by the big screen. Their songs are featured on soundtracks such as Cruel Intentions, Antitrust, Simply Irresistible, Hurricane Streets, as well as many films by writer/director Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Zack and Miri Make a Porno). Marcy Playground has been off the road since the summer of 2012, when they played the inaugural Summerland Tour. The band is looking forward to getting back out on the road this summer. They are planning tour stops across the nation as part of the Rockin’ Roadtrip tour with Fuel, Dishwalla, and more.

About This Footage

Underwater Sunshine: A [Rare](/tag/rare) Glimpse into [Marcy Playground](/artist/marcy-playground)'s Rebirth

In 2018, amidst a flurry of nostalgia for the 1990s alternative rock scene, Marcy Playground sat down for an intimate Garden Session at the Underwater Sunshine Festival in New York City. The footage, now available on YouTube, offers a rare and captivating glimpse into the band's creative rebirth two decades after their platinum-selling debut album.

As we revisit this moment in time, it's essential to understand the context surrounding Marcy Playground's resurgence. In 2018, the band was celebrating the 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut, which had catapulted them to mainstream success with the iconic single "Sex and Candy". The song's enduring popularity – it spent a record-breaking 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart in 1997 – is a testament to the band's ability to craft infectious, hook-laden melodies.

The Garden Session footage, captured by Ehud Lazin, provides an unvarnished look at Marcy Playground's chemistry and camaraderie. As they perform a stripped-down setlist that includes fan favorites like "Good Times" and "Sex and Candy", it's clear that the band is in their element. John Wozniak's witty banter and effortless stage presence are on full display, while Dylan Keefe and Shlomi Lavie provide a tight, dynamic rhythm section.

What makes this footage truly remarkable is its rarity. Marcy Playground has been relatively quiet since their 2012 Summerland Tour, and this Garden Session was a unique opportunity for fans to experience the band in an intimate setting. The Underwater Sunshine Festival, which hosted this performance, was a celebration of alternative rock's rich history and its enduring influence on contemporary music.

As we watch Marcy Playground navigate their setlist with ease, it's striking to consider how far they've come since their debut album. Over the years, the band has experimented with new sounds and styles, releasing four subsequent albums that have earned cult classic status among fans. Their contributions to film soundtracks, including Cruel Intentions and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, demonstrate a versatility that few bands can match.

As Marcy Playground prepares to embark on their Rockin' Roadtrip tour this summer, alongside Fuel, Dishwalla, and other notable acts, it's clear that they're ready to reclaim their place in the spotlight. The Garden Session footage serves as a poignant reminder of the band's enduring appeal and creative vitality – a testament to the power of music to transcend time and trends.

As we gaze upon Marcy Playground's sun-drenched performance, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle hum of conversation from festival-goers, it's impossible not to feel a sense of nostalgia wash over us. This is more than just a rare clip – it's a snapshot of a moment in time, frozen like a Polaroid photograph. And as we watch Marcy Playground weave their magic, we're reminded that some things truly are timeless.
