5 Aircraft Vanished - Each One Should Have Been Found
At nineteen minutes past one in the morning, the captain of a Boeing 777 says good night to air traffic control. Two minutes later the plane is gone from every screen watching it. It has not crashed. For almost seven more hours a satellite high above the Indian Ocean keeps hearing from it - roughly once an hour, a small electronic knock from a plane nobody can see. These are five aircraft that took off and were never found. Each one had a better chance of being found than the one before it: a radio, a ship listening, witnesses watching the sky, a satellite. Every one of them is still missing. 0:00 The cold open 1:03 Five - the White Bird, Paris to New York, 1927 3:07 Four - Amelia Earhart, the central Pacific, 1937 5:13 Three - Flight 19, off Florida, 1945 7:32 Two - Flying Tiger 739, the Philippine Sea, 1962 9:30 One - Malaysia Airlines 370, the Indian Ocean, 2014 12:00 The sixth - the name you expected to hear - SOURCES The White Bird - French Air Ministry inquiry into the loss of Nungesser and Coli, 1927; the Paris newspaper edition of 9 May 1927 that reported the arrival that never happened; TIGHAR White Bird Project field reports.
