This is an unlacquered C.G. Conn rolled tone-hole sarrusophone being played by our product specialist Mike Neu on a modified alto mouthpiece to fit the contra-bassoon bocal. These instruments are interesting in that they have the same fingerings as a saxophone but play using a bassoon bocal and double reed. Josh Creekmore (our own repair technician at Saxquest) overhauled it, and it has since sold, but it certainly won't be the last restoration we do of this instrument. About Sarrusophone
The sarrusophones are a family of metal double reed conical bore woodwind instruments patented and first manufactured by French instrument maker Pierre-Louis Gautrot in 1856. Gautrot named the sarrusophone after French bandmaster Pierre-Auguste Sarrus (1813–1876), whom he credited with the concept of the instrument, though it is not clear whether Sarrus benefited financially.
