Simple Minds is a Scottish new wave group founded by Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill. The band celebrated its heyday in the 1980s. The band is best known for the song Don't You (Forget About Me) which was used as the title song for the film The Breakfast Club and was a number 1 hit worldwide (1985). The group Simple Minds was founded in 1977, initially under the name Johnnie & the Self-Abusers, by Charlie Burchill, Jim Kerr, Brian McGee and Tony Donald. Their early music, with influences from David Bowie and Magazine, among others, found recognition within the new wave movement. Reinforced with Mel Gaynor as drummer, the group released albums that were easier to listen to from 1982. These albums yielded the group a few small hits, of which Promised You a Miracle also became a hit in the Netherlands. Their big break came with the song Don't you (Forget about me) from 1985. With this song the group had a number 1 hit in many countries, including the Netherlands. The nucleus of Simple Minds consists of the two remaining original members, Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (electric & acoustic guitars, occasional keyboards after 1990, saxophone and violin). The other current band members are Ged Grimes (bass guitar), Cherisse Osei (drums), Sarah Brown (backing vocals), Gordy Goudie (additional guitar & keyboards). Notable former members include Mick MacNeil (keyboards), Derek Forbes (bass), Brian McGee & Mel Gaynor (drums) This performance was filmed and broadcast by AVROTROS during the Edison Music Awards Gala of March 7, 2002.
