What Turned America's B-52s Into Scrap Metal Over Vietnam?

B-52s
1970s1972youtube

During Operation Linebacker II in December 1972, U.S. B-52 Stratofortresses entered some of the most heavily defended airspace of the Vietnam War. The obvious explanation for the losses over Hanoi is the Soviet-designed SA-2 surface-to-air missile. But the missile was only the final link. This episode investigates the larger system behind the launch: early-warning radar, missile guidance, electronic jamming, North Vietnamese SAM crews, predictable B-52 flight patterns, the dangerous post-target turn, and the tactical adaptation taking place on both sides. We also reconstruct the December 20, 1972 mission of B-52G Quilt 3, examine the story of Brass 02, and explain why the commonly cited B-52 loss figures remain disputed. U.S. historical records generally identify 15 B-52s lost during Operation Linebacker II, while Vietnamese official histories claim 34 B-52s were shot down. This video does not treat either claim as automatically definitive. Where the historical accounts differ, they are identified separately. This channel examines military technology through the systems, tactics, people, and decisions behind historical artifacts. Every artifact tells a story. Sources consulted include U.S. Air Force historical material, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, U.S. government archival material, DVIDS accounts, and official Vietnamese military histories. Archival material is used for historical and educational analysis. Visual reconstructions are identified when used. The appearance of U.S. Department of Defense visual information does not imply or constitute endorsement. #VietnamWar #B52 #MilitaryHistory

Ricky Wilson died of AIDS-related illness in 1985, and Strickland permanently switched from drums to lead guitar. The band has also added various auxiliary members for albums and live ...
