Zildjian Behind the Scenes - Sterling Campbell (B-52s)
We sat down with Sterling Campbell (B-52s) in Boston and talked about his drumming, his cymbals, and his view on current music. Transcript of the Interview: When did you get started? Street kid in New York City....oh how did I get started. I banged on things, I banged on pots and pans and I think my mother got the message. And she got me a drumkit and that's how it started. What advice would you give to a starting drummer? The way things are today, you better love it. You better be really into it. You have to have strong will because it is really hard to be a musician these days. I mean you can play but in terms of making a living, it's really hard and you better be passionate about it. Why do you play Zildjian? I am not really good at talking about the sound of it. To me it's a feeling. Its just the way it feels and when the sticks bounce off. There's the sound too but I go for the feel of the cymbals and I don't feel that way with other company cymbals. It's got a thing to it. What is your opinion on the state of current music? Everything around us seems to be innovating itself and with music their seems to be a conform and their seems like there isn't. On a pop thing in terms of popular music, they are keeping us too much in our place it's time to take charge again.
