Hanoi Rocks “Malibu Beach Nightmare” Marquee Club, Wardour Street, London, England December 1983 “Malibu Beach Nightmare” began as a joke about California written in Finland. Andy McCoy first recorded it with Hanoi Rocks in 1981 as a calypso song called “Malibu Nightmare.” Two years later, the band returned to it for Back to Mystery City and recast it as hard rock. The change did more than make the song heavier. It turned Malibu from a distant fantasy into a place charged with speed, glamour and risk. At the time, Hanoi Rocks were beginning to close the distance between the world they imagined and the one they wanted to enter. Dale “Buffin” Griffin and Pete “Overend” Watts of Mott the Hoople produced the album, giving the band a direct link to the glam tradition that had shaped them. Bob Ezrin soon agreed to produce their next record, with sessions planned in Toronto. The breakthrough appeared to be arriving. Razzle’s death in Los Angeles in December 1984 stopped that rise and effectively ended the original lineup. The song now carries the tension of that brief period when Hollywood was still an aspiration rather than the place where the band’s future came apart.
