Alexis Korner Preachin' The Blues
Alexis Andrew Nicholas Koerner was born in 1928 in Paris to an Austrian Jewish father and a Turkish-Greek mother. He spent his childhood in France, Switzerland and North Africa and arrived in London in 1940 at the start of World War II. Along with his pal Cyril Davies, Korner started Blues Incorporated in 1961 and in he years to come, the band was home to many of the stalwarts of the first British Beat Boom: Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, Long John Baldry, the list is astounding. And the influence cast on the younger generation of bands coming up at the time incalculable. Taken from his 1965 LP and adapted from Robert Johnson’s 1936 recording, here Korner plays a bouzouki by sliding a door key along the strings, while Phil Seamen adds “African-style” drumming.
