The Woodstock music festival began on August 15th, 1969. The three-day concert featured 24 rock bands totaling thirty-two acts that performed outdoors despite sporadic rain. It was held on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York 40 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock. The influx of attendees to the rural dairy farm created a massive traffic jam. To add to the difficulty in dealing with the large crowds, recent rains had caused muddy roads and fields. The facilities were not equipped to provide sanitation or first aid for the number of people attending; hundreds of thousands found themselves in a struggle against bad weather, food shortages, and poor sanitation. Despite it all, Woodstock attracted more than 400,000 attendees making it one of the largest music festivals in history. Among the bands that declined the invitation to perform at the festival, Frank Zappa of The Mothers of Invention said, "We were invited to play there, we turned it down. A lot of mud at Woodstock." --- #woodstock1969 #musicfestival #art #hippie #onthisday #1960s #youth #biography #rockbands #credenceclearwaterrevival #frankzappa #music
